COLORADO SPRINGS — No. 3 Fort Lewis College placed six players on the All-
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer teams today, led by
Christine Schmelzle's RMAC Defensive Player of the Year and
Damian Clarke's RMAC Co-Coach of the Year accolades, Assistant Commissioner
Sarah Meier announced today.
Schmelzle, a 5-foot-9 senior from Coconino High School in Flagstaff, Ariz., was joined on the All-RMAC first team by
Hayley Hollenga, a 5-foot-7 junior forward from Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs. Hollenga was one of three players league-wide as a unanimous first team choice.
For Schmelzle, the floodgates have opened in terms of postseason recognition. Just today, she was also named first team
CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District 7 and
RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. Earlier this year, she was a Preseason All-RMAC selection and
first team RMAC All-Academic performer, while earning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on two previous occasions.
She leads the RMAC in goals against average (0.49 per game), save percentage (.887) and shutouts (nine) and ranks fifth in saves (71).
“She's just steadily improved throughout her career,” Clarke said of his goalkeeper. “I guarantee this is something she did not expect, regardless of how well she's played this year.”
Hollenga has also accumulated a mess of recognition during 2010. Previously this season, she was named to the
RMAC All-Academic and Preseason All-RMAC first teams, was the
RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 14, and became the first woman athlete in FLC history to be listed in
Sports Illustrated's “Faces in the Crowd” (Sept. 30).
She leads the RMAC in game-winning goals (six) and ranks among league leaders in points per game (third, 1.40), goals per game (third, 0.67), goals (fourth, 10) and scoring (sixth, 21 total points, 10 goals, one assist).
“I think Hayley is probably the most consistent player we've ever had here,” said Clarke. “Her goal scoring prowess is second to none and she can score in so many different ways.”
Three Skyhawks were named to the All-RMAC second team:
Erika Shisler,
Sara Egbom and
Lauren Riley.
Shisler, a 5-foot-3 senior midfielder from Durango, received All-RMAC recognition for the second time in her career. She was previously a third team pick in 2008. She leads the conference in assists (11) and assists per game (0.61), while ranking among league leaders in scoring (12th, 17 total points, three goals, 11 assists), points per game (12th, 0.94) and goals (28th, three)
“Shisler has shown a tremendous work rate through her career,” said Clarke. “I think it's well-deserved for her to get some credit for the hard work that she's put in.”
Egbom, a 5-foot-4 junior forward from Hope Christian High School in Albuquerque, N.M., earned All-RMAC accolades for the second time. She previously was a first team pick as a freshman in 2007 when she was also RMAC Co-Freshman of the Year. 2010 also saw her earn second team
CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District 7 and
RMAC All-Academic first team awards.
She ranks among league leaders in assists (sixth, 0.28), assists per game (ninth, 0.28), scoring (15th, 15 total points, five goals, five assists), points per game (16th, 0.83), goals (17th, five) and goals per game (20th, 0.28).
“Eggie is just a dynamic player who can play in so many different positions,” said Clarke. “She's very difficult [for opposing players] to deal with and she can't go unnoticed.”
Riley, a 5-foot-6 freshman defender from La Cueva High School in Albuquerque, N.M., helped anchor the Skyhawk defense that allowed a league-low 0.56 goals per game and 0.54 goals against average.
“Her award is well-deserved,” said Clarke. “She's a freshman player who has obviously been an absolute staple to our success.”
Madyson Wellcome, a 5-foot-5 freshman defender from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., was a third team All-RMAC choice. Wellcome was previously named as
RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12, 2010.
“Madyson, in my mind, is the best one-v-one defender in the conference,” said Clarke. “She plays at a different level.”
Of his own RMAC Co-Coach of the Year award — the second year in a row that he's been so honored — Clarke diverted the credit to assistant coaches
Todd Padgett and
Bree Baker.
“It's flattering to obviously have the coaches recognize the team's success, but in my mind the success goes to the entire staff,” said Clarke. “Both Todd and Bree have done a job to help this defensive unit get recognized. It's obviously the defensive unit that's the platform to what we do.”
