COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College defender
Madyson Wellcome was chosen as the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, RMAC assistant commissioner
Sarah Meier announced today.
“This is a well-earned recognition for Madyson,” said fourth-year head coach
Damian Clarke, whose team is ranked sixth in the latest
NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II rankings. “She's playing tough and hasn't missed a minute since she was put in against CSU-Pueblo [eight games ago].”
Wellcome, a true freshman from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., helped the Skyhawks shut out No. 11 Metro State 1-0 on Sunday and held regionally-ranked Colorado Mines to one goal in a 2-1 win on Friday.
She becomes the third Skyhawk women's soccer player this season to win the weekly RMAC distinction, joining goalkeeper
Christine Schmelzle (Sept. 7, RMAC Defensive Player of the Week) and forward
Hayley Hollenga (Sept. 14, RMAC Offensive Player of the Week).
The Skyhawks conclude a six-game homestand by hosting Mesa State (4-6-2 overall, 2-5-1 RMAC) at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Dirks Field. Then they immediately hit the road for a pair of league games in Denver — at Colorado Christian (1-11-1, 1-7-1) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and at No. 11 Metro State (9-2-1, 5-2-1) at noon Sunday.
