ITHACA, N.Y. — Fort Lewis College goalkeeper
Christine Schmelzle was named to the ESPN Academic All-District 7 women's soccer first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Committee announced today.
Skyhawk forward
Sara Egbom was named to the Academic All-District 7 second team.
Schmelzle, a 5-foot-9 senior from Coconino High School in Flagstaff, Ariz., carries a 3.72 grade point average in Psychology.
She is the most decorated goalkeeper in FLC women's soccer history. Just today, she was also named
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year,
first team All-RMAC and
RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. Earlier this year, she was a Preseason All-RMAC selection and
first team RMAC All-Academic performer. She also earned RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on two previous occasions in 2010.
She leads the RMAC in goals against average (0.49 per game), save percentage (.887) and shutouts (nine) and ranks fifth in saves (71).
“The kid is just a model of hard work,” said fourth-year FLC head women's soccer coach
Damian Clarke. “She makes the right decisions day in and day out. That's why she's successful in the classroom and on the field.”
Egbom, a 5-foot-4 junior from Hope Christian High School in Albuquerque, N.M., carries a 3.62 grade point average in Accounting. Thus far in 2010, she has been named to the
All-RMAC second team and
RMAC All-Academic first team.
She ranks among league leaders in assists (sixth, 0.28), assists per game (ninth, 0.28), scoring (15th, 15 total points, five goals, five assists), points per game (16th, 0.83), goals (17th, five) and goals per game (20th, 0.28).
“She's another kid who works hard,” said Clarke. “To have those grades as an accounting major, you're talking about someone who is disciplined. She makes the right choices to perform both on and off the field.”
Nominations and voting for the CoSIDA/ESPN All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. There is a University Division (Division I programs) and a College Division (DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA programs).
Three Academic All-District teams are chosen in each district, with those on the All-District first teams placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Thus, Schmelzle will be on the Academic All-America ballot.
The Skyhawks (16-1-1 overall, 12-1-1 RMAC) are ranked No. 3 in the latest NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II rankings and won the 2010 RMAC regular season championship for the first time in school history.
