Nick Tomsick scored a season high 37 points Tuesday night against Northern New Mexico, but the Skyhawks couldn't overcome NNM, falling 94-92 in overtime.
The Skyhawks started the game with four missed field goals before
Alex Herrera netted the first two points of the game. Fort Lewis kept the lead five minutes into the game before Matthew Brtio hit a three-point field goal to tie the game at 15:09 in the first half. From that point on, NNM would not relinquish the lead until four minutes into the second half off of Tomsick's three-pointer. The Skyhawks lead didn't last long as NNM went on a 20-5 run to take a 77-71 lead with 1:24 left in regulation.
Trailing by five points with 43 seconds left in the game, Tomsick hit one of his six three-point field goals to cut the lead to two points. NNM missed two free throws but fouled
JoeBell Austin with 18 seconds left. Austin sank both free throws to tie the game as the Skyhawks scored five points in 25 seconds.
The extra period belonged to NNM as they sank 4-of-7 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws. Fort Lewis netted 5-of-11 field goals and 1-of-4 free throws in the overtime.
Eighteen of Tomsick's 37 points came from long range. He finished the game making 14-of-29 field goals. All five of Austin's field goals were from behind the arc. Austin added three steals, three assists and three rebounds. Herrera posted his third double-double of the season with 15 rebounds and 10 points.
The Skyhawks shot 38.6 percent from the floor and 68.2 percent from the charity stripe. NNM fared better from the floor, sinking 43.8 percent of their shots and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Fort Lewis (3-1 overall) will play their third and final game of the 2013 Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Thanksgiving Tournament Wednesday night against Tiffin University. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. HST (8 p.m. HST).
