COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College center
Alex Herrera was named the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Baden Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, RMAC Assistant Commissioner
Sarah Meier announced today.
Herrera led No. 20 Fort Lewis (14-2 overall, 11-2 RMAC) to home wins over Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines this past weekend.
A 6-foot-10, 235-lb. sophomore from Ignacio High School in Ignacio, Colo., dominated at both ends of the court, leading the Skyhawks in scoring (22.5 points per game), rebounding (10 per game) and blocked shots (seven per game).
He finished with a career-high 24 points in FLC's 84-71 win over Colorado Christian on Friday and added 21— including a walk-off dunk — in Saturday's 71-69 win over Colorado Mines.
Herrera had eight blocks for the second time in three games in Friday's contest and added six blocks one night later. Herrera's eight rejections in one game are tied for second most in FLC history.
“Alex was sensational at both ends of the court,” said 17th-year FLC head coach
Bob Hofman. “We're really proud of the way he's developing and maturing, both on and off the court.”
In his first season as a full-time starter, Herrera leads the RMAC in blocks (2.9 per game) and field goal shooting (60.7 percent). He also ranks among league leaders in defensive rebounds (third, 5.8 per game), rebounding (fourth, 8.4 per game), offensive rebounds (eighth, 2.7 per game) and scoring (14th, 14.4 points per game).
Herrera's sweep marks the first time a Fort Lewis men's basketball player has won both of the RMAC weekly awards. Former FLC women's basketball player Dana Schreibvogel twice swept the awards during the 2010-11 season (on Nov. 22, 2010 and Jan. 4, 2011).
The league first began issuing Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards during the 2010-11 season, when it abandoned its East and West Divisions and its one weekly award per division.
Fort Lewis travels to Alamosa, Colo., for a Top 25 showdown with No. 18 Adams State at 8 p.m. Saturday in a game that pits the two teams tied for second place in the RMAC standings. The Skyhawks and Grizzlies meet for the second time this year. ASU rallied from 18 down to beat FLC 82-76 on Dec. 8 in Whalen Gymnasium.
