COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College men's basketball player
Matt Billups was named the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Baden Offensive Player of the Week, RMAC Assistant Commissioner
Sarah Meier announced today.
Billups, a 6-foot, 168-lb. senior guard, led the Skyhawks in scoring in both games this weekend. In a 61-49 win over Western State on Friday, he scored 24 points, going 9-for-18 (.500) from the field and 4-for-9 (.444) from three-point range with three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. In Saturday's 61-50 win over Colorado Mesa, he scored 19 points, going 5-of-12 (.417) from the field, 2-of-3 (.667) from behind the arc, and 7-of-9 (.778) from the free throw line with six rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Four of his steals came in the second half, when FLC held the Mavs to just 16 points and rallied from a four-point halftime deficit.
“It's well-deserved. He had just a tremendous weekend, especially in light of Torrey (Udall) and Matt (Morris) being injured,” said 16th-year FLC head coach
Bob Hofman. “It was one of the greatest back-to-back performances one of our players has ever had. He made the big shots down the stretch. Matt has been a great leader for our program.”
A three-year starter, Billups was named to the Capitol One Academic All-Central Region team earlier this year. He is a two-time RMAC All-Academic performer, having been named to the second team this year and the Honor Roll last season. He also received the D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement awards in 2010-11.
Billups ranks among RMAC leaders in minutes played (tenth, 31.5 per game), free throw shooting (12th, .797), scoring (17th, 12.7 ppg), steals (17th, 1.2 spg), three-point field goals (18th, 1.3 per game), assists (22nd, 2.0 apg), and three-point shooting (23rd, .355).
The Skyhawks (15-11 overall, 13-9 in league games) qualified for the RMAC Shootout for the 11th year in a row and are seeded No. 6 in the league playoffs. Fort Lewis will travel to third-seeded Adams State (19-7, 15-7) at 7 p.m. tomorrow for its first round game.
