COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College guard
Marcus Ayala was named the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Baden Offensive Player of the Week, RMAC Assistant Commissioner
Sarah Meier announced on Dec. 18.
Ayala led Fort Lewis (7-1 overall, 4-1 RMAC) to wins over Colorado Mesa 71-61 on Dec. 16 and Western State Colorado 73-70 on Dec. 17.
A 5-foot-11, 180-lb. senior from Maryvale High School in Avondale, Ariz., Ayala averaged 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in the two games, while shooting 70 percent from the floor (14-of-20) and 72.7 percent from three-point land (8-of-11). In the win over Colorado Mesa, Ayala tallied 17 points (4-of-9 shooting), four rebounds and four assists. In the following night's win over Western State, he added 22 points (8-of-11 shooting) and three caroms.
Ayala's 22 points, eight field goals and five three-pointers against the Mountaineers established new career highs.
“Marcus, the whole season and even in the preseason, has just been outstanding,” 17th-year FLC head coach
Bob Hofman told the
Durango Herald. “He's made big plays where we've needed them.”
Prior to arriving in Durango a year ago, Ayala was a two-year starter at Central Lakes College from 2009-11. He earned first team all-region and first team all-conference accolades both seasons at Central Lakes.
The Skyhawks won't play again until Jan. 4, when they travel to Chadron, Neb., for an 8 p.m. showdown with Chadron State (1-9, 1-5). The following night, FLC visits Spearfish, S.D., for its first-ever meeting with Black Hills State (3-7, 2-4) at 5:30 p.m.
