TOWSON, Md. — Fort Lewis College women's basketball player Alex Easterbrook was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® third team, Towson University Sports Information Director Dan O'Connell announced today. The team was chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

“Obviously we are so happy for Alex on being named as an Academic All-American,” said first-year FLC head coach Jason Flores. “She is incredibly deserving of this recognition and is such a great example of what it is to be a true student-athlete. Her 4.0 GPA speaks volumes to her commitment in the classroom, and beyond that she is a player who on and off the court has been vital to any success we have had as a team. This is a very prestigious award and they could not have picked a better person to represent that than Alex.”

Easterbrook, a 5-foot-6 senior guard from Cactus Shadows High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average in Psychology. She becomes the first women's basketball player in school history to be recognized by CoSIDA.

Former FLC Raiders forward Rosann Robison was previously named an NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete in 1991-92.

Earlier this month, Easterbrook and teammate Ashley Kuchar were named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 team.

Easterbrook also received Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic honors for the third year in a row, having been named to the first team last month and to the Honor Roll as a sophomore and junior. She was also a D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement Award recipient in 2010-11.

A two-year starter and four-year letterwinner, Easterbrook ranks among FLC career leaders in three-pointers (14th, 76) and asssits (19th, 197). She currently leads the RMAC and ranks fifth in NCAA Division II in assists-to-turnovers at +2.44 per game. She also ranks fourth in the RMAC in assists at 3.8 per game.

Easterbrook is the last remaining member of the 2009-10 Skyhawk squad that went 35-4 overall and finished as the NCAA Division II runners-up. She has also helped FLC win three straight berths in the Division II playoffs (2009-10 through 2011-12), two straight RMAC Shootout crowns (2010-11 and 2011-12) and the 2009-10 RMAC regular season title.

She has also helped cement Fort Lewis' reputation as a perennial national leader in terms of academic success. The 2011-12 season marked the fourth year in a row that the Skyhawk program received WBCA Academic Top 25 distinction by having the eighth-highest GPA in Division II. FLC led not just Division II, but all levels of collegiate women's basketball in 2010-11 with a 3.715 GPA. In 2008-09 and 2009-10, Fort Lewis finished 23rd in Division II in team GPA.

The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (NCAA Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include separate squads for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, while the College Division combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

The Capital One Division II and II Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 DII and DIII Academic All-America teams program.
Easterbrook becomes the ninth Fort Lewis student-athlete to have been recognized as a CoSIDA Academic All-American, including four during the 2011-12 academic year. Past Skyhawks and Raiders to be recognized by CoSIDA include: Frank Atherton (football, first team, 2011), Berekk Blackwell (men's soccer, second team, 2011), Stephanie Janes (softball, second team, 2012), Tad Layman (football, second team, 2001), Matt Morris (men's basketball, third team, 2011-12), Ryan Ostrom (men's basketball, first team, 1997-98), Christine Schmelzle (women's soccer, third team, 2010) and Dee Tennison (football, first team, 1972).

The Skyhawks wrap up their 2012-13 home schedule this weekend, when they host Metro State (17-6, 15-3) on Friday and Regis (9-13, 8-10) on Saturday. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m. in Whalen Gymnasium.

Friday's game is billed as a white-out, and fans are encouraged to wear white to show their support of the Skyhawks. The women's game will be followed by a Top 25 showdown between the No. 1-ranked Metro State men's team and No. 17 Fort Lewis — marking the first time ever that a No. 1-ranked team has played at FLC. The Skyhawk men are 0-3 all-time when facing No. 1; the previous three bouts with No. 1 were played on the road or at neutral sites.

Saturday's game marks the final regular season home appearance for Easterbrook and fellow guard Katerina Garcia. The duo will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
