DURANGO, Colo. — Fort Lewis College women's basketball players Alex Easterbrook and Ashley Kuchar were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic first team, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Eric Danner announced today.

Erika Richards was named to the RMAC All-Academic second team, while three others — Mary Brinton, Katerina Garcia and Christie Groh — were named to the league's academic Honor Roll.

“We are very proud to have six student-athletes who were named to the academic all-conference team,” said first-year FLC head coach Jason Flores. “The great thing about all six is that they epitomize what it is to be a true student-athlete. They work extremely hard on the court, however they put forth that same effort in the classroom knowing the importance of life after basketball.”

Easterbrook, a 5-foot-6 senior guard from Cactus Shadows High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average in Psychology. She earned RMAC All-Academic honors for the third year in a row, having received Honor Roll recognition as a sophomore and junior. She was also a D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement Award recipient in 2010-11.

A two-year starter and four-year letterwinner, Easterbrook ranks 18th in FLC history in career three-pointers with 54. She's the last remaining member of the 209-10 Skyhawk team that went 35-4 overall and finished as the NCAA Division II runners-up.

Kuchar, a 5-foot-8 junior guard from Provo High School in Provo, Utah, maintains a 3.95 GPA in Psychology with a minor in Coaching. She previously received RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll distinction in 2011-12 and was the RMAC/Baden Defensive Player of the Week on Jan. 7, 2013.

A three-year starter, Kuchar ranks tenth in FLC history in career three-pointers with 108 and ranks among RMAC leaders in numerous statistical categories in 2012-13.

Richards, a 5-foot-9 junior guard from Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Ariz., carries a 3. 81 grade point average in Exercise Science-Physiology option with a minor in Coaching. She also received academic honors for the second year in a row, having previously been named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll as a sophomore. She was also a third team All-RMAC selection for her efforts on the hardwood in 2011-12, coming off the bench no less to help the Skyhawks to their second straight RMAC Shootout championship.

Richards ranks 12th in FLC history with 83 career three-pointers.

Brinton, a 6-foot redshirt freshman forward from Pagosa Springs High School in Pagosa Springs, Colo., has a 3.64 GPA in Exercise Science-Physiology option. She received RMAC academic honors for the first time. In her first season of collegiate competition, Brinton has averaged 3.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Garcia, a 5-foot-5 senior guard from Durango High School, carries a 3.35 GPA in Art-Graphic Design option and a minor in Business Administration. A Preseason All-RMAC selection as a senior and third team All-RMAC pick as a sophomore, Garcia earned academic honors for the first time.

She ranks among FLC career leaders in assists (seventh, 293), steals (tenth, 165) and three-pointers (18th, 54).

Groh, a 6-foot-1 junior forward from Carroll High School in Grapevine, Texas, maintains a 3.55 GPA in Education-Secondary Math Teacher option. The 2012-13 season marked Groh's second time earning the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll award. A first-year starter, she's averaging 10.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this winter.

Each of the six Skyhawk academic award winners has played big parts in Fort Lewis' reputation as a perennial national leader in terms of academic success. The 2011-12 season marked the fourth year in a row that the Skyhawk program received WBCA Academic Top 25 distinction by having the eighth-highest GPA in NCAA Division II. FLC led not just Division II, but all levels of collegiate women's basketball in 2010-11 with a 3.715 GPA. In 2008-09 and 2009-10, Fort Lewis finished 23rd in Division II.

To qualify for Academic All-RMAC accolades, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.30 or better, be a starter or reserve and have competed two consecutive semesters at their current institution. The student-athlete's cumulative GPA is what they had earned prior to the basketball season beginning. RMAC sports information directors selected the first and second teams.
