Fort Lewis goalkeeper Schaul chosen as RMAC Defensive Player of the Week

Redshirt freshman allows just one goal in first weekend of collegiate action

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College goalkeeper Ryan Schaul was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Sarah Meier announced today.

Schaul, a 6-foot-2 redshirt freshman from Wakeland High School in Frisco surrendered just one goal in his first weekend of collegiate action — a penalty kick in FLC's 2-1 win over No. 10 Incarnate Word on Friday — while shutting out St. Edward's 2-0 on Sunday. He currently has a 0.50 goals against average with a pair of saves.

Schaul was the backup goalie to Ryan Wirth during FLC's 2011 NCAA Division II national championship run. He didn't appear in any games, however, and redshirted.

No. 1 Fort Lewis travels to Phoenix next weekend for a pair of games against nationally-ranked teams. No. 19 Grand Canyon (2-0-0) hosts FLC at 9 p.m. MDT Friday at the GCU Soccer Stadium. The 'Lopes own a 4-1-0 lead in the all-time series, although the Skyhawks won the last meeting 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 21, 2004.

The Phoenix trek also includes a neutral-site matchup with California Baptist (2-0-0) at 8 p.m. on Monday at Chandler-Gilbert Junior College. The Skyhawks and Lancers, members of the PacWest Conference, have never met before. California Baptist received votes in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire Division II poll.
