TOWSON, Md. — Fort Lewis College first baseman Stephanie Janes was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® second team for NCAA Division II, College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Vice-Chair for Publicity/Communications Dan O'Connell announced today.

Janes, a 5-foot-4 senior from Xavier College Prep in Phoenix, graduated summa cum laude from Fort Lewis on April 28 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration-Finance. She maintained a 3.84 grade point average during her four years in Durango. She becomes the first player in the 29-year history of Skyhawk softball to earn Capital One Academic All-America accolades.

“I am very proud of Stephanie,” said second-year FLC head coach Kira Zeiter, who won Academic All-America honors during her own playing days at Adams State. “This is an award that not only shows how strong of a softball player she is but also how strong of a student that she has been her entire time here. It encompasses everything that Fort Lewis strives for in our student-athletes and this is setting an example for all our future Skyhawk softball players to come.”

Last month, Janes became the first FLC softball player and fourth Skyhawk student-athlete overall to earn Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Player of the Year honors. Prior FLC recipients included Nicole Schwab (volleyball, 2007), Zane Wells (soccer, 2009), and Matt Morris (men's basketball, 2010-11).

Janes was also a three-time RMAC All-Academic performer, a two-time D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Award recipient, and a 2011 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete. Last month, she was chosen as one of the three recipients of the Dr. Troy Bledsoe Award as the top female senior student-athlete at Fort Lewis.

In addition to her academic awards, Janes also earned all-region and all-conference honors for the first times in her career when she was named to the Daktronics All-Central Region second team and the All-RMAC first team as a senior.

Primarily a pitcher earlier in her career, Janes became FLC's regular starting first baseman in 2012 and has enjoyed her finest year ever at the plate. She batted .406 (fifth best in school history) with 58 hits, 43 runs batted in, 10 home runs, and a .664 slugging percentage (eighth highest in the FLC record book).

She finished her career as FLC's all-time leader in saves (four) and ranks among career leaders in pitching appearances (third, 76), strikeouts (fourth, 244), victories (sixth, 16), innings pitched (seventh, 310.1), games started at pitcher (seventh, 44), putouts (eighth, 311), batting average (10th, .347), RBI (11th, 64), home runs (12th, 12), slugging percentage (12th, .530), fielding percentage (16th, .966), and earned run average (19th, 5.44). As a freshman, she tossed fifth no-hitter in FLC history in game one against New Mexico Highlands on April 26, 2009. She also shares school single-game records for most home runs (2, twice) and most times hit by pitch (2, vs. Colorado Mines, game one, April 9, 2011).

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director. CoSIDA members from across the country vote on the Academic All-America teams.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

Janes becomes the eighth Fort Lewis student-athlete to be recognized on a CoSIDA Academic All-America team and the fourth this season. Previous winners included Matt Morris (men's basketball, third team, 2011-12), Frank Atherton (football, first team, 2011), Berekk Blackwell (men's soccer, second team, 2011), Christine Schmelzle (women's soccer, third team, 2010), Tad Layman (football, second team, 2001), Ryan Ostrom (men's basketball, first team, 1997-98), and Dee Tennison (football, first team, 1972).

Fort Lewis finished the 2012 season with a 30-26 overall record, setting a new school standard for victories. The Skyhawks won the RMAC tournament and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs, each for the second time in school history. FLC went 24-16 in RMAC games, tying for third place in the regular season standings.

The Skyhawks lost just three seniors — Stephanie and Natalie Janes and Jordan Willis — to graduation and are expected to return 15 players in 2013.
