Haubert, Villegas join FLC third baseman on All-Tournament Team

GOLDEN, Colo. — Fort Lewis College third baseman Chelsea Rodriguez was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2012 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Softball Championships, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Sarah Meier announced on Saturday.

Rodriguez was joined by FLC's two starting pitchers, Kassie Haubert and Alexis Villegas, on the RMAC All-Tournament Team.

Rodriguez, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from Highland High School in Mesa, Ariz., batted .583 with seven hits, one home run, three runs batted in, and three runs scored in FLC's five league playoff games. She was also a perfect 17-of-17 in the field with eight putouts and nine assists.

Haubert, a 5-foot-10 junior from Berthoud High School in Berthoud, Colo., went 2-1 with a 2.00 earned run average. She pitched 21 innings in the league championships, striking out nine and allowing just six earned runs (10 total).

Villegas, a 5-foot-6 junior from Tempe High School and Guadalupe, Ariz., went 2-0 with a 2.80 earned run average. She struck out six and allowed six earned runs (seven total) and was the winning pitcher in FLC's 7-4 win over Colorado Christian in the RMAC championship game.

Also named to the All-Tournament Team were Mariah Bledsoe (Colorado Christian), Kirstie Hiatt (Nebraska-Kearney), Courtney Maihi (Colorado Mesa), Genevieve Reyna (Colorado Christian), Lita Romero (Colorado Mesa), and Jackie Sanzolone (Colorado Christian).

Fort Lewis earned an automatic bid and the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Division II Central Regionals by virtue of winning the RMAC title in Denver and Golden last weekend. The Skyhawks will face top-seeded Minnesota State at 12:30 p.m. (MDT) Friday in the first round of the national playoffs.

The NCAA Central Regional tournament is a double-elimination event, meaning the Skyhawks will play a second game at either 10 a.m. (MDT) Saturday (winners' bracket) or 12:30 p.m. (MDT) Saturday (losers' bracket).

The upper half of the Central Region bracket plays at The Diamond at Gage Towers in Mankato, Minn., Friday through Sunday. Teams include No. 1 Minnesota State (35-7), No. 4 Minnesota-Duluth (37-20), No. 5 Concordia-St. Paul (30-21), and No. 8 Fort Lewis (30-24).

The lower half of the Central Region bracket plays at Augustana College's Bowden Field in Sioux Falls, S.D., Friday through Sunday. Teams include No. 2 Augustana (45-9), No. 3 Winona State (Minn.) (42-9), No. 6 Colorado Christian (31-25), and No. 7 Colorado Mesa (26-22).
