ALAMOSA, Colo. — Fort Lewis College's
Brook Wineland was named the
Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Defensive Player of the Week, WILA Commissioner Chris Day announced today.
Wineland, a 5-foot-7 freshman attack/midfield helped Fort Lewis (6-6 overall, 3-2 WILA) split its two home games last weekend. She had five caused turnovers, six ground balls, three draw controls, and three goals in FLC's 19-8 win over Colorado Mesa last Friday. Her five caused turnovers against the Mavs tied the school record for caused turnovers in one game. The hat trick against Colorado Mesa was the third of her young career.
She added four caused turnovers, four ground balls, three draw controls, and a pair of goals in FLC's 14-12 loss to Colorado College last Sunday.
“Brook had a great performance this weekend, both on attack and defense,” said second-year FLC coach Kelsey MacDonald. “Brook is the top of our full field ride and this weekend she did what we asked of her: cause havoc for the opponent's goalie and defenders when they are trying to clear the ball. Her success resulted in a lot of caused turnovers and ground balls for her. Brook also capitalized on those mistakes and put the ball in the net for us as well.”
The award is the first WILA honor for Wineland.
Despite playing just 12 games at the collegiate level, Wineland already ranks among FLC career leaders in most statistical categories, including assists (fourth, 7), draw controls (fourth, 37), total points (sixth, 26), goals (seventh, 19), ground balls (tenth, 32), caused turnovers (11th, 15), and games played (18th, 12).
Her 32 ground balls thus far in 2012 marks the second highest total for a single season in the FLC record book.
Fort Lewis hosts Regis (6-7, 4-2) at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Ray Dennison Memorial Field in its only game of the week. The Rangers are a perfect 7-0 all-time against the Skyhawks, including a 22-8 win in Denver on March 31.
