Skyhawk duo sweeps WILA Player of the Week honors

Waugh nets defensive award, Ally Kvidera earns offensive honors

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Fort Lewis College swept the weekly Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Player of the Week accolades, with Ally Kvidera taking home offensive honors and Genna Waugh earning defensive accolades, WILA Commissioner Chris Day announced today.

Kvidera, a 5-foot-6 sophomore midfield from Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minn., broke her twin sister Abby's school record for most goals in a game when she scored nine in a 20-6 win at Colorado Mesa on Saturday. She also had eight ground balls and 12 shots in that game, both of which rank second in school history. Kvidera also set a school-record by tallying eight draw controls in Wednesday's 21-6 win at Adams State. She scored four goals and assisted on three others in that game as well and finished the 2-0 Skyhawk week with 13 goals, three assists, 16 total points, 22 shots (15 on goal), 12 draw controls, and 13 ground balls.

“Ally had a great week,” said second-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “She played great in the Adams game … getting three assists shows how she likes to share the ball. In the Mesa game, she came out and controlled our midfield and capitalized when she had the opportunity.”

The award is the first weekly honor for Kvidera. As a freshman in 2011, she earned WILA Freshman of the Year and All-WILA first team awards.

Kvidera ranks among FLC career leaders in most statistical categories, including draw controls (first, 46), total points (second, 80), goals (second, 57), assists (second, 25), ground balls (third, 55), caused turnovers (fourth, 19), and games played (sixth, 20).

Waugh, a 5-foot-5 junior goalie from Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, Calif., set the Fort Lewis record with nine groundballs in Saturday's win at Colorado Mesa. She held the Mavericks to 1-for-9 shooting on free position shots and made six saves in that complete game, earning the win. She also had one save and one groundball in 30 minutes of relief against Adams State, allowing one goal and making one save.

“G is always a presence in goal,” said MacDonald. “Last week, especially in the Mesa game, she was quarterbacking our defense and coming up big save wise and in terms of ground balls.”

Waugh also earned WILA weekly honors for the first time in her career. She was a second team All-WILA choice as a sophomore in 2011.

She ranks as FLC's career goalkeeping leader in most statistical categories, including games played (24), minutes played (1,063:14), goals against average (12.92), saves (147), and victories (.523). She also ranks among school leaders in save percentage (second, .391), ground balls (fifth, 50), and caused turnovers (14th, 5).

The Skyhawks (4-2 overall, 2-0 in WILA games) travel to Denver where they'll face Grand Valley State (Mich.) (4-4) at noon Friday and Regis (4-4, 3-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be played on the Regis Match Pitch.
