ALAMOSA, Colo. — Fort Lewis College's
Abby Kvidera was chosen as the
Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Offensive Player of the Week, WILA Commissioner Chris Day announced today.
Kvidera, a 5-foot-5 sophomore midfield from Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minn., scored 14 goals and one assist in FLC's four games in Southern California over spring break. She scored on two-thirds of her shots (14 of 21) and had a .810 shots-on-goal percentage. Kvidera also logged 12 ground balls and six draw controls and went 6-of-8 on free position shots.
“Abby played consistently well all week,” said second-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “She came out strong on attack and also was a big contributor on defense coming up with key ground balls and draw controls.”
Kvidera's six goals in FLC's 20-19, double-overtime win at Whittier on March 6 ranks third in school history for most goals in a single game. She owns the school record with eight goals vs. Millsaps last year.
She also scored three goals in the Skyhawks' 13-12 win over Pomona Pitzer on March 5, one goal in FLC's 12-9 loss to Occidental on March 8, and four goals in FLC's 23-9 loss to Claremont Mudd-Scripps on March 9.
This marks the second time that Kvidera has won a WILA Player of the Week award. She previously was named WILA Defensive Player of the Week on April 13, 2011. She was also a first team All-WILA selection as a freshman in 2011.
Though she's only appeared in 18 career games, Kvidera ranks among FLC career leaders in most statistical categories, including assists (second, 11), total points (third, 58), goals (third, 48), draw controls (fourth, 29), ground balls (seventh, 35), and caused turnovers (tenth, 15).
The Skyhawks (2-2 overall, 0-0 in league games) open WILA play at 3 p.m. tomorrow, when they travel to Alamosa, Colo., to face Adams State (0-2, 0-2). Fort Lewis also plays at Colorado Mesa (1-2, 2-5) at 7 p.m. Saturday.
