Villegas chosen as RMAC Pitcher of the Week

Junior allowed just one earned run in 13.1 innings of work

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College pitcher Alexis Villegas was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, RMAC assistant commissioner Sarah Meier announced today.

Villegas, a 5-foot-6 junior from Tempe High School in Guadalupe, Ariz., went 1-0 with a 0.51 earned run average and six strikeouts in three games at the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., last weekend. She went the distance in her lone start of the weekend, a 3-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday. She also pitched 6.1 innings of relief without allowing an earned run in two games on Saturday.

“Alexis pitched extremely well all weekend. She was using all pitches in her arsenal to keep the opposing hitters off-balance,” said second-year FLC head coach Kira Zeiter. “Alexis is calm and confident on the mound and puts a sense of ease in the team.”

Villegas was a two-year starter at South Mountain Community College the past two seasons and helped her team win back-to-back regional titles and third place at NJCAA national championships. She was Pitcher of the Week on several occasions in junior college.

She becomes the first Skyhawk to win RMAC Pitcher of the Week since Cary Moone received the award four times in five weeks late in 2008.

Last week, sophomore third baseman Chelsea Rodriguez became the first Skyhawk to win RMAC Player of the Week honors since Temple Levings on February 23, 2005.

Fort Lewis (2-7 overall) went 1-3 at the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., last weekend. The Skyhawks lost to Grand Canyon (Ariz.) 7-0 and to Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) 11-1 on Saturday before dropping an extra-inning game to Grand Canyon 10-9 and beating Notre Dame de Namur 3-1 on Sunday.

The Skyhawks open RMAC play this weekend when they host Black Hills State (S.D.) at Ricketts Field #3 in Farmington, N.M. Doubleheaders start at 11 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. The games were moved to Farmington due to the snowpack at Aspen Field, FLC's regular home venue.
