COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College third baseman
Chelsea Rodriguez was named the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week, RMAC assistant commissioner
Sarah Meier announced today.
Rodriguez, a 5-foot-6 sophomore third baseman from Highland High School in Mesa, Ariz., led FLC in batting average (.583), hits (seven), runs (seven), home runs (three), runs batted in (nine), slugging percentage (1.417), walks (six), and on-base percentage (.684) at last weekend's Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Chelsea was consistent all weekend at the plate. She showed power, poise, and intelligence while at-bat, and is always a rock over at third base,” said second-year FLC head coach
Kira Zeiter. “I am looking forward to her continuing this success all season long.”
Rodriguez was a third-team All-RMAC selection as a freshman in 2011.
She becomes the first Skyhawk to win a weekly RMAC award since Cary Moone received RMAC Pitcher of the Week honors four times in five weeks in 2008. Rodriguez is the first FLC field player to win RMAC Player of the Week honors since
Temple Levings on February 23, 2005.
Fort Lewis (1-4 overall) opened its season at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nevada, last weekend. The Skyhawks won their season opener over Upper Iowa 9-4 before losing their next four to Mary (N.D.) 9-7, Cameron (Okla.) 9-7, St. Cloud State (Minn.) 10-6, and Minot State (N.D.) 5-4.
The Skyhawks conclude their non-conference schedule at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix this weekend. The Skyhawks play two games each against Grand Canyon (Ariz.) (3-4) and Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) (3-2).
