KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Fort Lewis College forward
Sam Weiss added to her postseason plaudits today by earning first team All-NSCAA South Central Region honors, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced today.
FLC's
Elena Benavides and
Madyson Wellcome were named to the regional second team.
“The more I think about this season and the obvious disappointment with a few results, the more I begin to see the silver lining,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “These players are team players, kids who give all they have to the team and the game. I'm very proud and humbled to be a part of their program. I think the recognition of this team and its players will help us all look back and smile at the effort we put in this year.”
Weiss, a 5-foot-4 sophomore from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., set new FLC records for single-season goals (17) and total points in 2012 and shared the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference lead in goals. She ranked among NCAA Division II leaders in game winning goals (second, 7), points per game (seventh, 2.21) and goals per game (10th, 0.895). Weiss also twice tied a school record for most goals in a single game with three-goal hat tricks against Angelo State on Sept. 9 and Colorado Christian on Oct. 26.
Her long list of accolades in 2012 includes: Daktronics NCAA Division II Women's Soccer All-America honorable mention; Daktronics NCAA Division II All-South Central Region first team; All-RMAC first team; RMAC All-Academic second team; All-RMAC Tournament Team; and RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4.
Weiss ranks among FLC career leaders in points (seventh, 517), goals (fifth, 23) and assists (14th, 11).
A 5-foot senior midfielder from Sandia Prep in Albuquerque, N.M., Benavides was previously named to the All-RMAC second team earlier this fall, the All-RMAC third team in 2011 and the RMAC All-Tournament Team in 2010.
She ranked among RMAC leaders in assists (second, 10) and total points (20th, 14) in 2012.
Benavides also ranks among FLC career leaders in assists (second, 23), games played (third, 88), total points (10th, 43) and goals (17th, 10). She's totaled 13 points on two goals and a team-high nine assists in 2012.
Wellcome, a 5-foot-4 junior defender from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., earned NSCAA all-region honors for the third year in a row. She was previously a second team NSCAA All-Central Region pick in 2010 and a third team NSCAA All-Central Region selection in 2011. (RMAC teams, including FLC, moved to the South Central Region from the Central Region this fall.)
The regional honor is the latest in a long list of career accolades for Wellcome. She was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 team in 2012; earned RMAC All-Academic second team honors twice during her career (2011, 2012); is a three-time All-RMAC selection (second team in 2011 and 2012, third team in 2010); was named to the Daktronics all-region second team three times (Central Region in 2010 and 2011, South Central Region in 2012); the RMAC All-Tournament Team (2010); two RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors; two Preseason All-RMAC teams (2011 and 2012); and the RMAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year (2011).
Wellcome scored her first career goal in FLC's 3-3 draw against Regis on Oct. 28.
Head coaches from NCAA Division II women's soccer teams from across the South Central Region chose the NSCAA teams.
Fort Lewis ended its season at 13-4-3 overall and 8-3-3 in RMAC games. The Skyhawks advanced to the semifinals of the league playoffs, where they lost 3-1 to Regis.
The Skyhawks lose three seniors to graduation: Benavides,
Rachael Budagher and
Serena Mancha.
