Fort Lewis’ Weiss named to RMAC All-Tournament Team

Sophomore scores three goals in tournament to set new FLC single-season scoring records

DENVER — Fort Lewis College's Sam Weiss was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer all-tournament team, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Sarah Meier announced yesterday.

Weiss, a 5-foot-4 sophomore forward from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., scored all three of FLC's goals in the RMAC playoffs. She had two goals in a 2-0 win at UC-Colorado Springs last Wednesday and the lone Skyhawk goal in a 3-1 loss at Regis last Friday.

“She obviously strikes fear in opposing coaches and teams,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “She ended the season leading the RMAC in points, as well as goals. I would say her stats do a lot of talking.”

Weiss set new FLC records for single-season goals (17) and total points (42) in 2012 and led the RMAC in both categories. She also twice tied a school record for most goals in a single game with three-goal hat tricks against Angelo State on Sept. 9 and Colorado Christian on Oct. 26.

She ranks among FLC career leaders in total points (seventh, 517), goals (fifth, 23) and assists (14th, 11).

The complete RMAC All-Tournament Team included: Most Valuable Player Jayln Yates of Colorado Mines; Sade Akindele, Alison Cahill, Marissa Davis and Meghan Stuart of Regis; Aubrey Bagley, Dani Hering, Kelsey Neal and Meagan Woodworth of Colorado Mines; Weiss of Fort Lewis; and Karisa Price of Metro State.

Earlier this season, Weiss named to the All-RMAC first team, the RMAC All-Academic second team and was picked as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4.

Fort Lewis likely ended its season at 13-4-3 overall and 8-3-3 in RMAC games. The Skyhawks advanced to the semifinals of the league playoffs, but needed to advance further to have a realistic chance of earning a bid to the 2012 NCAA Division II playoffs.

The selection show will take place at 5:30 p.m. today at www.ncaa.com.

Should the Skyhawks not advance, Friday's RMAC semifinal loss marked the final game of three seniors: Elena Benavides, Rachael Budagher and Serena Mancha.
