INDIANAPOLIS — Fort Lewis College's
Sam Weiss received Daktronics NCAA Division II Women's Soccer All-America honorable mention, national coordinator Jackie Paquette announced today.
The sophomore becomes just the third player in the history of the FLC women's soccer program to be named to an All-America team as selected by sports information directors from across the country. Previous Skyhawks to receive the honor include Erika Shisler (honorable mention in 2010) and Jamie MacArthur (third team in 2009).
Weiss, a 5-foot-4 forward from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., set new FLC records for single-season goals (17) and total points (42) in 2012 and shared the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference lead in goals. She also twice tied a school record for most goals in a single game with three-goal hat tricks against Angelo State on Sept. 9 and Colorado Christian on Oct. 26.
“I'm more then proud of Sam and the effort she put into our program this year,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “I really think she has quite a bit left in the tank. She just keeps growing as a person and this reflects in her football as well as her school work. She has become a superb student-athlete.”
She ranks among FLC career leaders in points (seventh, 517), goals (fifth, 23) and assists (14th, 11).
Earlier this season, Weiss named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Central Region first team, the All-RMAC first team, the RMAC All-Academic second team, the All-RMAC Tournament Team and was picked as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4.
Sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools and conferences selected the Daktronics All-America teams. The process begins at the regional level with all first team all-region picks advancing to the national ballot. This is the seventh year Daktronics has sponsored the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer All-America and all-region teams. A total of 59 student-athletes representing 30 different schools filled out the three teams and honorable mention squad.
The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. Tyler Lobe and Brandon Bronzan of the Sonoma State University sports information office assisted in the voting process.
Fort Lewis ended its season at 13-4-3 overall and 8-3-3 in RMAC games. The Skyhawks advanced to the semifinals of the league playoffs, where they lost 3-1 to Regis.
The Skyhawks lose three seniors to graduation:
Elena Benavides,
Rachael Budagher and
Serena Mancha.
