ALAMOSA, Colo. — Fort Lewis College's Sam Weiss was named to Daktronics All-South Central Region Division II women's soccer first team, regional coordinator Chris Day announced on Monday.

Emma Cannis and Madyson Wellcome were named to the all-region second team.

Weiss, a 5-foot-4 sophomore forward from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., set new FLC records for single-season goals (17) and total points (42) in 2012 and led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in both categories. She also twice tied a school record for most goals in a single game with three-goal hat tricks against Angelo State on Sept. 9 and Colorado Christian on Oct. 26.

“She obviously strikes fear in opposing coaches and teams,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “She ended the season leading the RMAC in points as well as goals. I would say her stats do a lot of talking.”

She ranks among FLC career leaders in points (seventh, 517), goals (fifth, 23) and assists (14th, 11).

Earlier this season, Weiss named to the All-RMAC first team, the RMAC All-Academic second team, the All-RMAC Tournament Team and was picked as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4.

Cannis, a 5-foot-7 junior forward from Gilbert High School in Gilbert, Ariz., received all-region honors for the first time in her career. She was previously named to the All-RMAC third team and the RMAC All-Academic second team in 2011 and was chosen to the RMAC All-Tournament Team in 2010.

The three-year starter ranks among FLC's career leaders in total points (fourth, 63), assists (fourth, 19) and goals (sixth, 22).

“Emma was unbelievable this season,” said Clarke, who sang his forward's praises all year long and credited a lot of Weiss' record-setting season to the efforts of Cannis, who finished 2012 with 20 total points on six goals and eight assists.

Wellcome, a 5-foot-4 junior defender from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., earned Daktronics all-region second team honors for the third year in a row. She was a second team All-Central Region pick in 2010 and 2011 (RMAC teams moved to the South Central Region this fall).

The regional honor is the latest in a long list of career accolades for Wellcome. She was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 team in 2012; earned RMAC All-Academic second team honors twice during her career (2011, 2012); is a three-time All-RMAC selection (second team in 2011 and 2012, third team in 2010); was named to the NSCAA All-Central Region twice (second team in 2010, third team in 2011); the RMAC All-Tournament Team (2010); two RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors; two Preseason All-RMAC teams (2011 and 2012); and the RMAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year (2011).

She scored her first career goal in FLC's 3-3 draw against Regis on Oct. 28.

“Madyson leads our team on and off the field and is probably the most consistent player we have,” said Clarke. “Her toughness and mindset as a whole make her a fun kid to work with.”

Regional champion Colorado Mines placed six players on the All-South Central Region teams, including three first team selections. West Texas A&M forward Leslie Briggs was named the Daktronics Division II Women's Soccer South Central Region Player of the Year.

First team all-region selections will be on the ballot for Daktronics Division II All-America honors, which will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 28 prior to the NCAA semifinal games.

Division II sports information directors at colleges and universities that field women's soccer chose eight all-region teams and will select the All-America squad.

Fort Lewis ended its season at 13-4-3 overall and 8-3-3 in RMAC games. The Skyhawks advanced to the semifinals of the league playoffs, where they lost 3-1 to Regis.

The Skyhawks lose three seniors to graduation: Elena Benavides, Rachael Budagher and Serena Mancha.
