COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College's Madyson Wellcome was named to the Capital One Academic All-District women's soccer team, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Assistant Commissioner Sarah Meier announced last night.

Wellcome becomes the third player in the history of FLC women's soccer to receive the honor. Christine Schmelzle was named to the Academic All-District 7 first team in 2010, while Sara Egbom netted second team honors that same season. FLC Athletic Hall of Famer Kate Kelly also received a different (yet similar) district distinction — the NSCAA/Umbro Regional Scholar Athlete award — in 1999.

Wellcome, a 5-foot-4 junior defender from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., maintains a 3.61 GPA in Public Health. She has earned RMAC All-Academic second team honors twice during her career (2011, 2012).

In addition to her academic accolades, Wellcome has won a bevy of awards during her three-year FLC career, including three straight All-RMAC selections (second team in 2011 and 2012, third team in 2010); Daktronics All-Central Region twice (second team in 2010 and 2011); NSCAA All-Central Region twice (second team in 2010, third team in 2011); RMAC All-Tournament Team (2010); two RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors; two Preseason All-RMAC teams (2011 and 2012); and the RMAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year (2011).

She scored her first career goal in FLC's 3-3 draw against Regis on Oct. 28.

“Madyson leads our team on and off the field and is probably the most consistent player we have,” said Clarke. “Her toughness and mindset as a whole make her a fun kid to work with.”

During her career, the Skyhawks have won the 2010 RMAC regular season crown and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs twice (an Elite Eight appearance in 2010 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2011).

The 2012 Capital One Academic All-District soccer teams were selected by sports information directors in their respective districts. These teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America and Academic All-District programs in 2011.

The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 DII and DIII Academic All-America teams program.

Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

To qualify, candidates must maintain a 3.30 grade point average or higher, have completed two or more semesters at their respective institutions, be a starter or key reserve and be a sophomore standing both academically and athletically.

Fort Lewis (13-3-3 overall) plays RMAC regular season champion Regis (12-4-2) in the league semifinals at noon today on the Regis Match Pitch. The winner of the RMAC tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Today's game will be broadcast live on KIUP (930 AM and www.radiodurango.com) by play-by-play announcer John Mahoney and color commentator Andy Finley. Once the game starts at noon, live stats will be available at http://regisrangers.com/sports/wsoc/2012-13/schedule.

The RMAC championship game will be played on Sunday at a time and time to be determined by today' results. The highest remaining seed in the tournament will host Sunday's championship bout.
