COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College linebacker
Phil Odell was named to the All-
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference second team, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Eric Danner announced today.
“I think that's its phenomenal that Phil, after all of his hard work and individual efforts, got recognized by the conference, which is voted on by all of the head coaches,” said third-year FLC head coach Cesar Rivas-Sandoval. “Phil has been the most productive defensive player in Fort Lewis College football history. I wish our team success could have elevated his individual accolades even further, but it never diminishes those accomplishments.”
A 6-foot-1, 215-lb. senior from Show Low High School in Show Low, Ariz., Odell finished his career as FLC's all-time tackling leader with 367 career tackles. He ranked among RMAC leaders in tackles in each of his four seasons: third in 2012 (107), sixth in 2011 (101), third in 2010 (84) and 16th in 2009 (75).
In addition to his 107 tackles, Odell recorded 7.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for 25 yards in losses, 2.5 quarterback sacks for 9 yards in losses, an interception for 12 yards, three pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble.
Last month, Odell was named to the RMAC All-Academic first team for the third year in a row. He was also a D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement Award recipient in 2009 and a National Football Foundation-Colorado Chapter All-Colorado second team pick in 2011.
“He's just been a great model for what work ethic looks like, on and off the field,” said Rivas-Sandoval. “He's one of those guys who can perform at the highest level in the classroom and the highest level on the football field. He's just an example of what great effort is, 24/7.”
Odell was the lone Skyhawk to earn All-RMAC accolades and the first Skyhawk football player to be recognized since wide receiver Justin Johnson was a first team All-RMAC selection in 2010.
The RMAC coaches chose the following for major awards: Colorado State-Pueblo quarterback Ross Dausin, Offensive Player of the Year; Chadron State outside linebacker Kevin Lindholm, Defensive Player of the Year; Colorado Mines punter Taylor Accardi, Special Teams Player of the Year; CSU-Pueblo head coach John Wristen, Coach of the Year; Western New Mexico quarterback Mitch Glassman, Offensive Freshman of the Year; and CSU-Pueblo inside linebacker Kevin Cuff, Defensive Freshman of the Year.
The Skyhawks (0-10 overall, 0-9 in RMAC games) lose 13 seniors to graduation.
