COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College's
Sam Weiss was named to the All-
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer first team, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Eric Danner announced today.
Four other Skyhawks also received All-RMAC recognition.
Elena Benavides and
Madyson Wellcome were named to the second team, while
Lauren Riley and
Megan Striedel were chosen for the third team.
Weiss, a 5-foot-4 sophomore forward from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., has had a breakthrough season for the Skyhawks. Her 14 goals leads the team and ranks third most in school history for a single season. Her 36 total points (14 goals, eight assists) also is best on the Skyhawk roster and ranks second most in the FLC record books for a single season.
She twice tied a school record for most goals in a single game with three-goal hat tricks against Angelo State on Sept. 9 and Colorado Christian on Oct. 26. She already ranks among FLC career leaders in total points (eighth, 51), goals (ninth, 20) and assists (15th, 11).
Earlier this season, Weiss named to the RMAC All-Academic second team and was picked as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4.
“Sam has been a menace to opposing defenses all year,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “She deserves the recognition.”
A 5-foot senior midfielder from Sandia Prep in Albuquerque, N.M., Benavides was recognized by league coaches for the second year in a row, after earning All-RMAC third team accolades in 2011. She was also named to the RMAC All-Tournament Team in 2010.
Benavides ranks among FLC career leaders in assists (second, 22), total points (11th, 42) and goals (17th, 10). She's totaled 13 points on two goals and a team-high nine assists in 2012.
“In my opinion she is the best passing player in the RMAC,” Clarke said of Benavides. “She is the player our system depends on.”
Wellcome, a 5-foot-4 junior defender from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., has won a bevy of awards during her three-year FLC career, including three straight All-RMAC selections. She now has two All-RMAC second team selections (2011, 2012) and one third team nod (2010) to her resume.
Additionally, Wellcome has been named to the RMAC All-Academic second team twice (2011, 2012), the Daktronics All-Central Region twice (second team in 2010 and 2011), the NSCAA All-Central Region twice (second team in 2010, third team in 2011), the RMAC All-Tournament Team (2010), two RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, two Preseason All-RMAC teams (2011 and 2012) and the RMAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year (2011).
She scored her first career goal in FLC's 3-3 draw against Regis last Sunday.
“Madyson is probably the most consistent player we have,” said Clarke. “Her toughness and mindset as a whole make her a fun kid to work with.”
Striedel, a 5-foot-6 junior midfielder/forward from Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Ariz., received All-RMAC recognition for the second year in a row, having been named to the third team as a sophomore in 2011. During her three-year career, Striedel has amassed 39 total points on 16 goals and seven assists. She ranks among FLC career leaders in goals (10th and total points (15th). During the 2012 season, she's notched 13 points on five goals and three assists — good for third highest on the team.
“Megan has a determination and bite that make her an impact in nearly every match,” said Clarke. “Her presence controls the emotion of the team.”
Riley, a 5-foot-7 junior defender from La Cueva High School in Albuquerque, N.M., earned All-RMAC honors for the second time, having been a second team selection as a true freshman in 2010. Earlier this month, she was named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll for the first time.
During her three-year career, she's recorded three total points (one goal, one assist).
“Lauren is our best all around athlete,” said Clarke. “When she is on, the defense is as good as any.”
