COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College quarterback
Tim Jenkins was chosen as the National Football Foundation-Colorado Chapter Player of the Week,
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Assistant Commissioner
Sarah Meier announced today.
Jenkins, a 6-foot-3, 220-lb. senior from ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo., threw for a career-high 501 yards, completing 36 of 58 passes (.621) for three touchdowns in FLC's 50-21 loss to then-NCAA Division II No. 3 (and current No. 2) Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
It was the third time in Jenkins' career that he's thrown for 400 or more yards, including a 405-yard effort at Western New Mexico a week earlier. His 501 yards ranks third in FLC history for most passing yards in a single game. Andrew Webb (2000-03) owns the top two spots: 638 yards at Mesa State on Nov. 16, 2002, and 560 at Western New Mexico on Nov. 2, 2002.
In his past two games, Jenkins has thrown for 906 yards.
Fort Lewis head coach Cesar Rivas-Sandoval attributes Jenkins' recent success to his abilities to call his own plays from behind center.
“We've really taken the training wheels off him,” said Rivas-Sandoval. “I've spent more time during the week on working on Tim's play calls rather than hamstringing him with my play calls during the game.”
Jenkins was the RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2009 and a second team All-RMAC pick in 2010. He's also a two-time RMAC Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 20, 2010, and Oct. 17, 2011) and was FLC's Most Valuable Player in 2010.
He became the third FLC quarterback to eclipse 8,000 career passing yards. He now has 8,064 yards, trailing just Webb (11,742) and FLC Athletic Hall of Famer Thad Trujillo (9,873, 1991-94).
Fort Lewis (0-4 overall, 0-3 RMAC) Colorado Mines (3-2, 1-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the annual homecoming game. Gates to Dennison Field open at noon.
The Skyhawks lead the all-time series with the Orediggers 26-24, including a 14-11 record at Dennison Field. CSM has won the past five meetings, though.
Jenkins becomes the sixth player to receive National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame-Colorado Chapter players of the week awards in 2012, joining Jordan Webb of Colorado (week 5), J.B. Mathews of Colorado State-Pueblo (week 4), Cody Davies of Adams State (week 3), and Cody Getz of Air Force (week 2). There was no winner chosen for the first week.
The NFFCC includes Colorado-based teams from NCAA Divisions I and II, including Air Force, Colorado, and Colorado State from Division I FBS, Northern Colorado from Division I FCS, and Adams State, Colorado Mesa, Colorado Mines, Colorado State-Pueblo, Fort Lewis, and Western State Colorado from Division II.
Meier sends out weekly releases during the season, coordinating voting for the weekly winners and post-season All-Colorado team. Winners are selected by sports information directors from each school and other NFFCC members from across the state.
