Purcell becomes second Skyhawk to sign with San Antonio Scorpions

Former FLC national champ joins Jennings, Cunningham in NASL

SAN ANTONIO — Euan Purcell, an All-American striker on Fort Lewis College's 2009 NCAA Division II national championship team, to join the San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League (NASL), the club announced Monday.

Purcell, 26, earned third team NSCAA and Daktronics All-America honors as a senior in 2009, helping FLC to a 24-1-0 record and their second national title. He was also named to the NCAA Division II All-Final Four Team as a senior, was an All-Central Region performer as a junior and senior, and a first team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection as a junior and senior. Purcell was a two-time RMAC Offensive Player of the Week during his career.

He led the Skyhawks in scoring in both 2009 (45 total points on 21 goals and three assists) and 2008 (29 points, 14 goals, one assist). He ranks among FLC leaders in total points (sixth, 78) and goals (fourth, 37).

Born in Bolton, England, Purcell studied Accounting at Fort Lewis. Prior to the completion of his playing career, he served as a student assistant coach with the Skyhawks during the 2010 season.

He joins former teammate Jeff Jennings with the Scorpions.

In addition to Purcell, the Scorpions announced the signing of goalkeepers Patrick Hannigan and Daryl Sattler, forward Hans Denissen, and midfielder/winger Luiz Tiago.

“The international makeup of our team definitely underscores the fact that soccer is the world's favorite sport,” said Scorpions head coach Tim Hankinson, who coached both Purcell and Jennings in 2007 and 2008 at Fort Lewis. “Through tryouts and connections within the soccer community, we've identified some terrific talent, some with Major League Soccer (MLS) experience. Our team-building will continue with more player signings prior to the start of training camp next month.”

The North American Soccer League is the Division 2 men's outdoor professional soccer league in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The NASL member teams include the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, FC Tampa Bay, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, NSC Minnesota Stars, Montreal Impact (joining MLS in 2012), Puerto Rico Islanders, and the San Antonio Scorpions FC (beginning play in 2012).

One of Purcell's and Jennings' former national championship teammates, Jamie Cunningham, will face them in the NASL. Cunningham appeared in 1,813 minutes as a defender for Puerto Rico in the 2011 season.
