Soaring to new heights: 36 Skyhawks receive national academic award

Division II Athletics Directors Association recognizes top student-athletes

CLEVELAND — Thirty-six Fort Lewis College student-athletes received Division II Athletics Directors Association (DII ADA) Academic Achievement Awards for the 2010-11 academic year, DII ADA Assistant Executive Director Jason Galaska announced today.

“Our student-athletes continue to prove that academics are their top priority,” said FLC Assistant Director of Athletics Lynne Andrew. “They're students first and athletes second.”

The Academic Achievement Award program recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level. Ninety-eight institutions sent in nominees; a total of 3,676 student-athletes were recognized.

“Congratulations to all of this year's Academic Achievement Award winners,” said DII ADA President Greg Waggoner, director of athletics at Western State College of Colorado. “We want to thank and congratulate those colleges and universities that took part in honoring its student-athletes and look forward to continued participation in the future.”

The Skyhawks who received the distinction include:
In order for a student-athlete to receive an Academic Achievement Award, the athletics director of the Division II institution must be a current dues paying member of the DII ADA. Also, each recipient must:
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Have completed a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work
  • Have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year

All 11 varsity sports at FLC are represented on the squad.

In addition to the DII ADA awards, 52 Skyhawk student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors through the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference or Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association during the 2010-11 academic year.

Fort Lewis teams experienced unprecedented success in the classroom. Eight of the 11 varsity teams maintained GPAs of 3.00 or higher. The women's basketball squad led the way with a 3.70 GPA, the highest of any collegiate basketball team in the country, regardless of level of competitions. Other teams to carry a 3.00 GPA or higher included: women's soccer (3.30), volleyball (3.20), golf (3.10), lacrosse (3.04), softball (3.03), women's cross country (3.01), and men's soccer (3.00).
