COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Freshman third baseman Chelsea Rodriguez was named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference third team, RMAC assistant commissioner Eric Danner announced today.

Rodriguez, a 5-foot-6 freshman third baseman from Highland High School in Mesa, Ariz., ranked 18th in the conference in batting with a .327 average. She also drove in 19 runs and blasted six homers, five doubles and one triple before having her season cut short due to a concussion. She also proved to handle the hot corner with ease, posting a .955 fielding percentage and just six errors in 132 defensive chances.

“Chelsea has been a rock at third base,” said first-year FLC head coach Kira Zeiter. “This year she didn't play like a freshman and she showed the poise that it takes to compete in this conference. She brought a strong glove defensively and power from the three-spot all year long. We can expect many more great accomplishments from her while she is here at Fort Lewis.”

Zeiter added she was surprised and disappointed that the Skyhawks had just one player on the All-RMAC teams.

Notably absent from the all-conference team was FLC's senior offensive sparkplug, Kayla Bruner, who led the Skyhawks in nearly every offensive category and ranked among the RMAC's top five in batting (fifth, .423), slugging percentage (fourth, .805) and on-base percentage (third, .507). Bruner, whose batting and slugging numbers were second best in school history, also led the team in home runs (12), RBI (33), doubles (11), hits (52), runs (38) and stolen bases (10).

“Kayla was a senior leader on this year's team and co-MVP,” said Zeiter. “She showed how strong of an all-around athlete she is. It was a truly special senior season for her and I had expected her to receive recognition from the conference. I can assure her that the entire Skyhawk softball family knows exactly the kind of season that she had, and we are all proud.”

The All-RMAC teams are chosen by the league's 12 head coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Fort Lewis finished the 2011 season 13-28 overall, 12-24 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and fifth place in the RMAC West Division. The team loses just two seniors — Bruner and first baseman Joanna Young — to graduation.
