Morgan County’s Bryant to play collegiate golf at Fort Lewis

Senior finished one stroke off the lead at Georgia high school regionals

DURANGO, Colo. — Zach Bryant has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Fort Lewis College, Skyhawk golf coach Bud Andersen announced recently.

Bryant, a 5-foot-11 senior, will graduate from Morgan County High School in Buckhead, Ga., later this spring. He was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs who finished one stroke off the lead at the 2010 Georgia High School Northeast Regional Championship while guiding his team to a third place finish. Bryant also earned low medalist honors at the 2010 Madison County High School Tournament, finishing first among 96 golfers with an 18-hole score of 73. His 18-hole average in 2010 was 73.8, best on his team.

He also won the 2009 Cuscowilla Junior Club Championship with scores of 70-70, allowing him to play in the 2010 Cuscowilla Men's Club Championship against many former collegiate golfers. With scores of 69, 70 and 75, he tied the old tournament record and earned second place.

Bryant is one of six high school golfers to sign with the Skyhawks this spring, joining Cody Civiletto (Durango High School), Tyler Kolb (Rock Bridge Senior High School, Columbia, Mo.), Lucas Laudick (La Cueva High School, Albuquerque, N.M.), Shane Sampair (Forest Lakes Area High School, Forest Lake, Minn.), and John Thomson (Heritage Academy, Cresco, Iowa).

Fort Lewis' newest golfers join a program that has won seven conference championships, including the 2010-11 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season title earlier this month. The Skyhawks are seeded second in the NCAA Division II Central/West SuperRegional, to be held on May 1-4 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque.

The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships, held May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Florence, Ala. The finals will be hosted by the University of North Alabama.

The 2011 recruiting class is an important one for Andersen, as his Skyhawks will lose five seniors — Keenan Holt, Gavin Lyons, Devin Schreiner, David Schroeder and Justin Spray — at the completion of this spring's season.
