COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College softball players
Natalie Janes and
Jordan Willis were named to the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic second team and two of their teammates also received RMAC All-Academic accolades, Assistant Commissioner Eric Danner announced today.
Kassie Haubert and
Stephanie Janes were named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll.
Natalie Janes, a 5-foot-2 second baseman from Xavier College Prep in Phoenix, Ariz., maintains a 3.71 grade point average in Economics. Recently elected as president of the Associated Students of Fort Lewis College, Janes is batting .304 with 18 runs batted in and a pair of home runs in 2011. A three-year starter for the Skyhawks, this marked the second year in a row that she has been named to the RMAC All-Academic second team. She was also a recipient of the D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement Award a year ago.
“Natalie is an athlete who really steps up to the plate in terms of academics and athletics,” said first-year head coach
Kira Zeiter, herself a former Academic All-RMAC pick and Academic All-American at Adams State. “She is able to juggle being a solid second baseman and batter for our team and handle all of the other contributions that she makes to Fort Lewis. Natalie strives for the best that she can be on the field every day, and takes that mentality to the game of softball and to her academics.”
Willis, a 5-foot-2 shortstop from Hico High School in Hico, Texas, carries a 3.49 grade point average in Business Administration. She is batting .306 with 13 RBI and one home run this season. Like Janes, Willis also earned second team RMAC All-Academic distinction and a D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement award a year ago and is a three-year starter for FLC.
“Jordan takes pride in her academics as well as her athletics,” said Zeiter. “I am truly confident whenever anyone hits the ball in the shortstop area because she will scoop it up and fire the ball to first base. She is never satisfied and always strives for more in everything that she does.”
Haubert, a 5-foot-10 sophomore pitcher from Berthoud High School in Berthoud, Colo., maintains a 3.44 GPA in Exercise Science-Athletic Training option and also serves as a student trainer for the Skyhawks. She ranks among the RMAC Top 20 in most pitching categories, including appearances (seventh, 25), games in relief (ninth, seven), wins (tenth, nine), innings pitched (tenth, 123.2), games started (11th, 18), batters struck out (17th, 57), opponents' batting average (18th, .344) and earned run average (20th, 6.00).
A third team All-RMAC pitcher a year ago, 2011 marks Haubert's second time on the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll. She is a two-year starter who earned a medical redshirt in 2009 when she was injured after appearing in just one game.
“Kassie is a truly hard worker,” said Zeiter. “She has been a rock on the mound, and sets a tone of calm when she is on the field. She always gives 100% effort at all times, and that translates into the hard work and long hours that she puts into being an athletic training student.”
Stephanie Janes is a junior 5-foot-4 pitcher from Xavier College Prep in Phoenix who holds a 3.79 grade point average in Business Administration. She is currently 0-3 with an 11.61 ERA in 2011, her pitching appearances limited due to injury. She has also batted .333 with six hits and five RBI in 18 at-bats. Janes is also a repeat performer on the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll, having also earned the D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement award a year ago.
“I'm really proud of the contributions that Stephanie has made on and off the field for the Skyhawk team,” said Zeiter. “Her presence and determination in the line-up and in the circle were truly appreciated. She carries that attitude over to academics here at Fort Lewis, and takes pride in succeeding in all aspect of being a student-athlete.”
To qualify for RMAC All-Academic teams, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.30 or better, be a starter or reserve, and completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their current institution. RMAC sports information directors selected first and second teams.
