DURANGO, Colo. — Hayley Hollenga added to her lengthy list of accolades by being named as the Most Valuable Player Award for women's soccer at the 2011 Skyhawk Awards Banquet, held April 7 at the Student Union Ballroom.
“The MVP this year was so hard to choose — we had a number of great performances — but the most consistent player at the end of the day has to be the most valuable asset,” said Damian Clarke, who finished his fourth season as FLC head women's soccer coach in 2010. “I think Hayley grew a lot his year as a player and a leader. She was the player that other teams planned for, and that says it all.”
Hollenga, a 5-foot-8 junior forward from Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, Colo., scored six game-winning goals in 2010 and led the Skyhawks in goals (13) and total points (28).
On Sept. 30, 2010, she became the first-ever FLC women's athlete to appear in
Sports Illustrated's “Faces in the Crowd” — a recognition for scoring four game-winning goals during a five-game span.
She was also named to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America second team, the NSCAA/Performance Subaru and Daktronics All-Central Region first teams, the All-
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first team, the RMAC All-Academic first team, the RMAC All-Tournament team, the Preseason All-RMAC squad and the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week (on Sept. 14, 2010).
Hollenga became the Skyhawks' career leader in total points (88), assists (22) and shots (224). She also ranks second in career goals (33) and career game-winning goals (11).
Fort Lewis had the most successful season in the 17-year history of its women's soccer program in 2010. The Skyhawks went 18-3-2 overall and 12-1-1 in the RMAC, establishing new school standards for single-season success. FLC also won its first ever RMAC regular season women's soccer championship, its first-ever NCAA Division II Central Region title, advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA playoffs, and climbed to No. 3 in the national rankings, its highest-ever ranking. The Skyhawks finished No. 7 in the final NSCAA/HendrickCars.com poll.
