DURANGO, Colo. — Adriana Saiz and Jessica Wilson shared the Most Valuable Player Award for volleyball at the 2011 Skyhawk Awards Banquet, held April 7 at the Student Union Ballroom.

“Jess and Adriana were our leaders this year,” said seventh-year FLC head volleyball coach Shelly Aaland. “While the team voted on the award, I shared their feelings that these two were our Most Valuable Players for the 2010 season as a result of their attitudes, overall play and commitment to the team.”

Saiz, a 5-foot-9 senior setter from Manzano High School in Albuquerque, N.M., earned MVP honors for the second year in a row. She was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Honor Roll selection and a past recipient of the D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement Award.

Saiz missed several mid-season matches due to a knee injury suffered midseason, but still set career highs in assists (858), kills (47), service aces (16) and blocks (32). At the time of her injury, the Skyhawks were atop the RMAC West Division.

Wilson, a 5-foot-11 junior outside hitter from Durango High School, played and started in all 27 games for the Skyhawks in 2010. She set personal single-season bests in kills (281), hitting efficiency (.176), assists (28), digs (307) and blocks (27).

The Skyhawks finished their 2010 season with an overall record of 15-12. FLC was 9-9 in conference games, finished third in the RMAC West Division and qualified for the RMAC playoffs. The team lost just three seniors — Chelsea Flaming, Taylor Hillberry and Saiz — to graduation.
