COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College's
Justin Spray was named
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week yesterday, RMAC Assistant Commissioner
Sarah Meier announced yesterday.
Spray, a senior from Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, shot a 10-over-par score of 226 at the Mustang Intercollegiate earlier this week, an event hosted by Western New Mexico at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
He was just one shot behind medalist John Jackson of California State-Monterrey Bay (+9, 225). Spray jumped out to an early lead, shooting 74 and 75 in the first two rounds, but surrendered the lead on the final round when Jackson bested him by five strokes.
Spray led the No. 25 Skyhawks to a second place finish in the tournament, ahead of the nation's top two Division II teams in this week's Golfstat Top 25 poll, No. 1 California State-Chico and No. 2 Western Washington, as well as No. 19 California State-Stanislaus.
Fort Lewis will see many of these same teams at their next tournament, the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational at the Wigwam Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz., Sunday through Tuesday.
