COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College women's basketball player
Dana Schreibvogel was named the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Eric Danner announced today.
Schreibvogel and
Abby Jackson were named to the All-RMAC first team, while
Mary Rose Paiz earned All-RMAC second team accolades and
Katerina Garcia was picked as an All-RMAC third team selection.
“We were well represented on the all-conference teams, which is a tribute to the four players that were honored and more importantly to the success of our team,” said sixth-year FLC women's basketball head coach Mark Kellogg.
The distinction was the latest in a host of awards that Schreibvogel has collected this year. The six-foot junior forward from Weld Central High School in Keenesburg was previously named to the RMAC All-Academic second team, was picked as the RMAC Student-Athlete of the Month for January, and received five RMAC Player of the Week accolades (three offensive, two defensive) in 2010-11. She earned RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll and D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement awards a year ago.
“Dana has had a remarkable year and is definitely deserving of the MVP award,” said Kellogg. “I have never coached a player that has elevated her game to a completely different level in such a short period of time. She has been so consistent all year and quickly established herself as our offensive leader.”
Schreibvogel leads the RMAC in scoring (18.6 points per game) and field goal shooting (.582). She also ranks among league leaders in defensive rebounds (seventh, 5.3 per game), rebounding (12th, 6.8 per game), steals (13th, 1.7 per game) and free throw shooting (14th, .771).
She ranks among FLC career leaders in free throws (eighth, 221), blocked shots (19th, 26) and scoring (20th, 841 points).
Jackson, a 5-foot-4 guard from Memorial High School in Tulsa, Okla., previously received RMAC All-Academic first team and preseason All-RMAC first team accolades in 2010-11. She earned RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll distinction during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons and was also a D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement Award recipient each of those two years. This year marked Jackson's third straight campaign on the All-RMAC squads, having been named to the second team in 2009-10 and honorable mention in 2008-09.
“I couldn't be more happy and proud for Abby,” said Kellogg. “Abby has come a long way in her four years here and she is now being recognized for her play on the court. She is our unquestioned leader and one of the best point guards in the RMAC.”
Jackson leads the RMAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (+2.2 per game) and ranks among league leaders in three-point percentage (second, .418), three-point field goals (third, 2.3 per game), assists (fifth, 3.6 per game), steals (fifth, 1.9 per game), free throw shooting (seventh, .811) and scoring (25th, 10.9 points per game).
She is also FLC's career leader in victories (115), assists (383) and three-point field goals (227) and ranks among career leaders in steals (eighth, 167), scoring (12th, 978) and free throws (16th, 167).
Paiz, a 5-foot-11 guard/forward from St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque, N.M., earned an All-RMAC award for the first time in her career. She was a RMAC All-Academic first team selection this season and earned RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll and D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement awards last year.
“Mary has been fantastic all year for us and she just comes to play every night,” said Kellogg. “Her toughness is contagious and we rely on Mary to do so many things for us. Mary is another player that played at a different level than we had seen from her in the past.”
Paiz ranks among RMAC leaders in rebounding (fourth, 7.7 per game), defensive rebounds (fifth, 5.4 per game), steals (eighth, 1.9 per game), offensive rebounds (tenth, 2.3 per game) and scoring (27th, 10.7 per game).
She ranks among FLC career leaders in steals (17th, 119), rebounds (18th, 414), blocked shots (19th, 26) and three-pointers (20th, 34).
Garcia, a 5-foot-5 sophomore from Durango High School, transferred to the Skyhawks from NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University. One of the most decorated student-athletes in DHS history, this becomes her first honor at the college level.
“We are glad to see Kat get some recognition for her impact on the game,” said Kellogg. “There is no doubt that the game changes when she comes in. Kat has made some unbelievable strides this year and we can't wait to see what she does for a couple more years.”
Garcia ranks among RMAC leaders in steals (second, 2.2 per game), assist-to-turnover ratio (fifth, +1.4 per game) and assists (tenth, 3.4 per game).
Fort Lewis (26-2), ranked sixth in the nation and seeded second in the RMAC Shootout, will face third-seeded Colorado Christian (18-9) at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the league semifinals at the Colorado State Fairgrounds Events Center in Pueblo. The RMAC Shootout championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the same location.
