COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College women's basketball player
Jenna Santistevan was named the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row, RMAC Assistant Commissioner
Sarah Meier announced today.
Santistevan, a 6-foot junior center from Dakota Ridge High School in Littleton, Colo., set a career high with six blocked shots in FLC's 92-68 win over Colorado Christian Saturday. She added two blocked shots and two defensive rebounds in the victory. One night earlier in a 74-48 triumph over Colorado Mines, Santistevan notched three steals, two blocks and three defensive caroms. In the home sweep, she averaged 4.5 steals, 2.0 blocks and 2.5 defensive rebounds per game.
“Jenna had another outstanding weekend on the defensive end of the floor,” said sixth-year head coach
Mark Kellogg. “She is really establishing herself as an elite defensive player. Jenna is so versatile that it really allows us to be creative on defense.”
Santistevan, who ranks 12th in school history with 47 blocked shots, ranks among league leaders in steals (sixth, 49, 2.0 per game) and blocked shots (fifth, 27, 1.1 per game).
This marks the seventh time this year that a Skyhawk women's basketball player has received a weekly RMAC award — the most in school history.
Dana Schreibvogel received five such honors (three offensive, two defensive) earlier this season, while Santistevan was previously named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 14, 2011.
Fort Lewis (24-1, 19-1 RMAC), ranked No. 4 in the latest
USA TODAY ESPN NCAA Division II poll, likely needs to sweep its final road trip of the year next weekend to claim at least a share of its fourth straight RMAC regular season crown. The Skyhawks travel to Western State (11-13, 9-11) at 6 p.m. Friday and to Mesa State (16-8, 13-7) at 5 p.m. Saturday.
No. 11 Metro State (24-1, 20-1) owns a half-game lead in the league standings but plays just one game in the season's final weekend. The Roadrunners' final game of the regular season is at Regis (10-15, 9-12) at 5 p.m. Saturday.
