COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College women's basketball players
Mary Rose Paiz and
Dana Schreibvogel were named the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, RMAC Assistant Commissioner
Sarah Meier announced today.
The duo led Fort Lewis to a road sweep this weekend, as the Skyhawks posted convincing wins at Colorado Mesa (69-55 on Friday) and at Western State (86-62 on Saturday). Both teams were previously undefeated in RMAC play.
Paiz, a 5-foot-11 senior forward from St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque, N.M., averaged 12 points, 10.5 rebounds and two steals per game on the road trip. She had 13 points, nine rebounds (seven defensive) and three steals against the Mavericks — a game that saw FLC hold CMU to just .386 shooting (22 of 57) from the field. Paiz followed that up with an 11-point, 12-rebound effort against the Mountaineers. FLC held WSC to a dismal .329 from the field (22 of 70).
“Mary Rose had a good weekend and we need her to play like that all year,” said seventh-year FLC head coach Mark Kellogg, whose team is ranked No. 6 in the latest USA TODAY/ESPN NCAA Division II rankings. “She has been rebounding the ball very well. Coach (Kristen) Mattio and I said before the weekend that we needed Mary Rose to play well and she definitely stepped it up.”
The award was Paiz's first-ever RMAC weekly honor.
Schreibvogel, a 6-foot senior forward from Weld Central High School in Keenesburg, Colo., averaged 19 points and five rebounds per game last weekend, shooting .520 from the field (13 of 25) and a near-perfect .923 from the line (12 of 13). She scored 21 points and grabbed four rebounds at Colorado Mesa, and followed that with a 17-point, six-rebound effort at Western State.
“Dana has started to find a nice offensive rhythm over the last few games,” said Kellogg. “She is hitting her stride and really attacking the basket. That's when she is at her best.”
Schreibvogel, who was chosen by league coaches as the Preseason RMAC Player of the Year, previously received RMAC Offensive or Defensive Player of the Week honors five times during the 2010-11 season.
Fort Lewis won't play again until Friday, Dec. 30, when they host Chadron State (1-9, 1-5) at 5:30 p.m. in Whalen Gymnasium. The Skyhawks also host Nebraska-Kearney (2-9, 2-4) at 4 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
