Hollenga nets golden goal in second overtime to lift women's soccer to 1-0 win over Augie

Skyhawks hit four posts during contest

DURANGO, Colo. – Hayley Hollenga scored 4:58 into the second overtime to lift Fort Lewis College to a 1-0 victory over Augustana College in the second day of action at the Dirks Women's Soccer Classic today.

The junior forward one-timed a pass from fellow junior Jane Barden into the back of the net in a bang-bang play that sent the Dirks Field crowd of 335 into a frenzy. Barden, who entered the game just 1:55 earlier, received the ball near the end line from the midfield and one-hopped a pass toward the charging Hollenga.

Fourth year FLC head coach Damian Clarke summarized the talents of Hollenga, a preseason All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection, in three words: “Haley is phenomenal.”

He heeded the advice of junior defender Madison Glantz, who told him in the break between the first and second overtimes that Barden would score a goal. “I thought, 'You know what? Jane has fresh legs and she's a good player.' She proved herself.”

The close score belied a statistical domination by the Skyhawks (2-0-0 overall). FLC outshot Augustana 24-6 and won the shots-on-goal battle 8-2. Four FLC shots clanged off goalposts or crossbars and Viking goalkeeper Amanda Wagner saved seven Skyhawk shots.

“I think we're going to be a tough team,” Clarke said. “We have the right mind-set to keep moving forward and keep persisting until we score. People are going to have a hard time scoring against us. We're not going to stop until we get something into the back of their net.”

Clarke added that his team's depth (17 players saw action against Augie) is its biggest strength. “There wasn't one person who did a bad job today,” he said. “I really feel like we have a lot of weapons, a lot of players, and the ability to make changes and be effective.”

The Skyhawks had early chances to get on the scoreboard. Torrey Larson, who was the hero in FLC's season-opening 1-0 win over St. Cloud St. on Friday, was denied by Wagner in the 13th minute. Following a corner kick in the 15th minute, Emma Cannis' scoring chance clanged off the post and Larson's rebound was corralled by Wagner. Hollenga ripped one off the post in the 42nd minute.

The second half went much the same way as the first. Wagner came up with four more saves, while Sara Egbom was denied by the crossbar in the 60th minute.

Augustana (0-2-0 overall) nearly won in regulation, though, with a pair of scoring chances late in the game. Stacy Dally couldn't generate much muster on a shot off a crossing pass in the 65th minute that FLC goalkeeper Christine Schmelzle saved from point blank range. In 76th minute, Maren Wirth hit the crossbar with a tough-angle shot.

The crossbar again proved to be FLC's worst enemy in the first minute of overtime when Elena Benavides lifted a shot over Wagner that barely caught the bottom of the bar and bounced away from the goal.

The Skyhawks return to action on Friday, Sept. 10 with a 6 p.m. (MST) match against West Texas A&M at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas. FLC also plays a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Sept. 12 at Eastern New Mexico.
