COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Tim Jenkins,
Willy Klein and
Richard Rodriguez were named
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Players of the Week this week, sweeping the weekly league honors.
“It's a tribute to our kids and all of their hard work,” said first-year head coach
Cesar Rivas-Sandoval. “It's also reflects diligent our coaching staff has worked to mentor and prepare all of our players.”
Jenkins, a 6-foot-2, 200-lb. sophomore quarterback from ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo., was chosen as RMAC Offensive Player of the Week. He completed 35 of 49 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns in FLC's
30-27 win at Western New Mexico Saturday. Last fall, Jenkins was chosen as the RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year.
Klein, a 5-foot-9, 200 lb. redshirt freshman linebacker from Basalt High School in Basalt, Colo., was named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. He had a pair of interceptions and 11 tackles during the victory. One of Klein's picks thwarted a WNMU scoring chance at the three-yard line. The other came late in the second half and, after a 21-yard return, led to Skyhawk touchdown.
Rodriguez, a 5-foot-8, 195-lb. junior kicker from San Diego, Calif., was named RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week for kicking a 52-yard field goal with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to lead FLC to victory in its 2010 RMAC opener. Rodriguez was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points. He prepped at the San Diego School for the Creative and Performing Arts and played junior college football at San Diego Mesa College.
Fort Lewis (1-1 overall, 1-0 RMAC) hosts CSU-Pueblo (3-0, 1-0) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Ray Dennison Memorial Field in Durango. The game marks the home opener for the Skyhawks.
