PORTALES, N.M. — Hayley Hollenga scored two goals as No. 14 Fort Lewis College defeated Eastern New Mexico 2-1 in double overtime today in women's soccer action at the ENMU Soccer Field.

“It was a very gritty performance,” said fourth year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “We didn't play very well in the first half and didn't seem to have a lot of energy. Eastern played well and was disruptive.”

Sydney Tucker head a ball past Christine Schmelzle at 30:15 to give the Zias (1-3-0 overall) a 1-0 lead that they took into halftime. Brook Serrano assisted on the play. For Schmelzle, known as “Cricket” to her teammates, it was the first goal she surrendered through four games in 2010.

“They scored on a crossing ball,” said Clarke. “They were able to capitalize on us not paying attention to players in the box. Their one dangerous player [Tucker] beat Cricket to the ball and headed it in.”

On the heels of a 1-0 win at No. 4 West Texas A&M on Friday, Clarke thought his Skyhawks (4-0-0) weren't as focused as they needed to be in the first half.

“In the second half, we were absolutely different,” he said. “We hit the post a couple of times. Physically, we started to take the game over and were tough, which we weren't in the first half.”

At 58:08, Hollenga connected with her first goal of the game. Erika Shisler received the ball wide on the right side and worked it to Hollenga, who one-timed it into the side netting.

Early in the second overtime, Hollenga connected again for her third game-winner in as many games. Nicole Schumacher played the ball to Elena Benevides, who sent a pass between the back four ENMU defenders. The pass sprung Hollenga, who dribbled the ball 30 yards before slotting it in the side netting for the win.

The Skyhawks outshot the Zias 31-9, including 12-6 in shots on goal. Hollenga had nine of those shots, including four on goal. ENMU's Sierra Cardenas made 10 saves, while FLC's Schmelzle had five.

The second half and overtime certainly saw FLC dominate. The Skyhawks launched 14 shots in the second half, eight in the first overtime and two in the second extra period. ENMU, on the other hand, had just three shots after halftime.

Fort Lewis opens Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17 at CSU-Pueblo. The road trip continues at noon (MST) Sunday at Nebraska-Kearney.
