Durango, Colorado– The Fort Lewis women’s basketball team was honored Tuesday when the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its winners for the 2009-10 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll.  With a team grade point average of 3.428, the Skyhawks ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II, tying their highest honor received by the WBCA.  The award is handed out to teams throughout the nation that carry the highest GPA for the entire season, based on the nomination submitted by WBCA-member head coaches.

The Skyhawks have now earned the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor twice in head coach Mark Kellogg’s five seasons at the helm.  The ranking of 23rd is the highest under Kellogg and the best in school history since last year’s team grade point average of 3.38 forged them into the academic success spotlight.

“It’s a statement to the quality of the student-athlete we get at Fort Lewis,” said Kellogg. “We are certainly proud of how serious our players take the academic side of things and we’ll continue to recruit student-athletes who excel both on the court and in the classroom. To watch our kids on a daily basis and see how committed they are academically, this is a tremendous recognition to them.”

Eight of the Skyhawk players earned multiple academic honors during the 2009-10 season.  Audrey George was voted to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District Team.  George was also joined by Laura Haugen and Katie Mackey on the RMAC 1st Team All-Academic. Abby Jackson, Stephanie Beeman, Mary Rose Paiz, Jenna Santistevan, and Dana Schreibvogel garnered RMAC Honor Roll status.  Lauren McCulloch was joined by Alex Easterbrook, Jenna Santistevan and Audrey George with perfect 4.0 GPAs during the 2009-2010 semesters.

GPAs are calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's roster in the given academic terms by the total number of hours earned by the team. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Per a motion passed by the WBCA Board of Directors in 2007, teams making the list of Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll must obtain at least a 3.000 overall GPA.

Fort Lewis not only excelled in the classroom, but posted a 35-win season this past year, finishing 35-4 overall after advancing to the NCAA Division II national championship game and making its third straight appearance in the NCAA national tournament.
