May 5, 2010. Palm Desert, CA - Herald Staff Report Day 1: Not so good.
Day 2: Much better.
“That's like seven or eight years in a row, the first day has killed us," Fort Lewis College men's golf coach Bud Andersen said Tuesday night. “They say you can't win a tournament on the first day, but you certainly can lose a tournament on the first day."
FLC carded a first-round 314 on Monday at the NCAA Division II Men's Central/West Super Regional Championships in Palm Desert, Calif., then rebounded with a 297 on Tuesday, the second day of the three-day tournament.
“(Monday) was terrible," Andersen said. “We kinda shot ourselves out of the tournament in the first round. We played a lot better (Tuesday). If we would've shot like we did (Tuesday on Monday) … then we'd be right there."
Instead, the improved round has FLC tied with Hawaii-Hilo for 14th place at regionals.
Chico State shot a 285 on Tuesday and leads the tournament by three strokes over Sonoma State.
Western New Mexico, the top representative for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, led by four shots late in the second round but slipped to third overall, five strokes back.
Cal State-Monterey Bay (595) is alone in fourth, and UC-Colorado Springs (594) is in a three-way tie for fifth place with Cal State-Stanislaus and Western Washington.
Only the top five teams, and the top two individuals whose team did not qualify, advance to the national tournament.
David Schroeder of FLC remains in that mix.
“If he plays well (today) ... I think if he shoots a 69 or a 68 than he's a guaranteed lock," Andersen said of the junior's chances to qualify for nationals.
“I think he (has a great chance)."
Brandon Harkins of Chico State and Gordon Webb of Western N.M. are tied atop the leaderboard at 4-under par.
Kyle Souza of Chico State tied Harkins with a tournament-low 3-under par Tuesday. He's in third place.
Ryan Carter of Sonoma State is fourth overall.
Schroeder is tied for fifth at 1-under par. He shot 2 under 70 on Monday and 1 over 73 on Tuesday.
“All in all, we were a lot better (Tuesday)," Andersen said. “We shot really well actually, we just didn't make any of our putts."
Devin Schreiner and Gavin Lyons matched each other with 73s. Lyons is tied for 62nd at 10-over par. Schreiner, a Durango High School alumnus, is tied for 81st at 13-over par.
Michael Adams is tied with Schreiner at 13 over, and Doug Manske, the Skyhawks' lone senior, is tied for 96th at 19-over par.
“I think the boys were a little bit embarrassed about their performance (Monday)," Andersen said. “If we play well (today), then we've got a chance to finish in the top 10 … which would be good."
