David Schroeder of Fort Lewis College finished the opening round tied for third place at the NCAA Div. II Super Regional on Monday in Palm Desert, Calif.

Schroeder, a junior from Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, shot a 2-under 70 on the 7,100-yard Troon Golf Classic Club course.

He's tied with Ryan Indovina of Cal State Dominguez Hills and Jeremy Wendelken of Sonoma State of California after the first of three scheduled rounds.

They're behind first-round leaders Gordon Webb of Western New Mexico and Trevor Blair of Cal State Stanislaus, who shot 69s.

Patrick Boag of Western Washington was one of three golfers tied for sixth. His 71 helped Western Washington to the first-day team lead (291). Four Western Washington golfers shot 74 or under.

Chico State of California was one stroke back at 292, followed by Western New Mexico (293) of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Sonoma State was fourth (294) with Dixie State College of Utah fifth (295).

Cal State Monterey Bay was sixth (299) with Cal State Stanislaus seventh (300).

Fort Lewis finished 18th as a team after Day 1, carding a composite 314.

Michael Adams shot 79 for Fort Lewis. Gavin Lyons added an 81.

Devin Schreiner and Doug Manske each shot 84 at the NCAA Div. II Super Regional in the desert of California.

UC-Colorado Springs of the RMAC was tied for ninth with Cal State San Bernardino after the first round of golf (303).

Colorado Christian was tied for 11th with Grand Canyon University (304).

Colorado School of Mines was tied for 14th with Hawaii-Hilo (308).

Twenty teams from the Central Region and the West Region qualified for the Super Regional.

Another 18-hole round is scheduled today.
