May 2, 2010. Las, Vegas, NM. - The Fort Lewis College softball team swept a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at New Mexico Highlands.
The Skyhawks, with four runs in the sixth inning, defeated Highlands 5-3 and 7-2.
“The kids played really well (Saturday)," FLC head coach Pam Adams said. “We had no errors. We had a couple of great catches, and we got timely hitting."
Jayme Fuller, a sophomore pitcher from Piedra Vista High School in Farmington, pitched six innings to collect the win in the opener. She struck out five and allowed only three runs. Freshman Kassie Haubert pitched the seventh inning for the save.
“Jayme's been throwing really well of late," Adams said.
Fuller also drove in two runs in the victory. Teammate Natalie Janes also drove in two.
Brooke Bails and Chelena Coulston had two hits each in the FLC win.
Haubert started in the second game for FLC. She pitched four innings. Stephanie Janes pitched the last three innings. Each FLC pitcher allowed only one run.
Coulston added two more hits in the nightcap. She also stole her third and fourth bases of the day.
Bails drove in four runs, including a three-run homer.
James, Kayla Bruner and Jordan Willis also drove in runs as the Skyhawks improved to 13-20 in the RMAC, 17-25 overall.
N.M. Highlands is 10-23 in the RMAC and 15-29 overall.
The two teams will play another doubleheader at 11 a.m. today in Las Vegas, N.M.
The Skyhawks' slim playoff hopes hinge on FLC victories today and losses by Adams State against Mesa State.
Adams State beat the Mavericks twice Saturday in Alamosa 11-10 and 16-8.
