The Fort Lewis College softball team split a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader with Western New Mexico on Friday afternoon.

The Skyhawks won the opener 3-1 before losing the nightcap 7-5 at Aspen Field on the FLC campus.

“Overall, we played much better defense, and we hit pretty well," FLC head coach Pam Adams said.

“After Denver last weekend, we wanted to play better defense, and we did."

She said Stephanie Janes pitched a four-hitter to boost the Skyhawks in the opener.

“She did a great job," Adams said.

Ashley Hibbs had a key first-inning RBI in the opener when she drove in Chelena Coulston.

“In the second game, we had more hits than they did, and our defense was solid," Adams said. “We just didn't get the timely hits we needed. A few more timely hits would have made it a different game."

Jamie Fuller, who pitched the second game, also had three hits, including two doubles, against Western New Mexico.

“The kids played really well," Adams said. “And we played good defense."

The two teams will play another doubleheader today, starting at 11 a.m.

“It should be a little warmer, hopefully," Adams said.

FLC moved to 10-10 in the RMAC and 11-15 overall. Western New Mexico, leading the RMAC West, is 14-5, 18-13.
