The Fort Lewis College men's golf team battled through blustery conditions Monday to take the lead in the annual Air Force JV Invite at the Air Force Academy north of Colorado Springs.

The Skyhawks lead by five strokes over fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team UC-Colorado Springs (578-583) after two rounds of the three-round tournament.

“Finally, we had a good, solid team effort," FLC golf coach Bud Andersen said.

Eight of the 10 RMAC golf schools are competing along with a host of individual NCAA Division I golfers from the University of Denver, Northern Colorado and the Air Force Academy.

“We had such a long winter, we're finally coming around into form," Andersen said after the Skyhawks came from behind in the second round to overtake first-round leader UCCS.

Gavin Lyons paced the Skyhawks with his 71-72-143. He's third overall individually.

David Schroeder, Doug Manske and Devin Schreiner of the Skyhawks are tied for sixth individually (146), giving Fort Lewis four golfers in the top six.

Schroeder shot 77-69-146. Manske shot 73-74-146. Schreiner, the former Durango High School standout, shot 70-76-146.

Michael Adams rounded out the FLC players with his 78-73-151.

Central Oklahoma (600), led by individual leader Andrew Green (67-68-135), is third behind FLC and UCCS.

Colorado Christian is fourth. CSU-Pueblo is fifth.

“We were two back after the firsr round, and we beat UCCS by seven shots (in the second round)," Andersen said.

“This is a biggie tournament for us," he said. “We're on the bubble to go to the Super Regionals. But we've got to close the deal (today)."
