April 11, 2010. Pueblo, CO. - The Fort Lewis College softball team fell just short in Saturday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader against CSU-Pueblo.
The Skyhawks lost Game 1 8-6, and the bats went cold in Game 2 of a 2-1 loss.
In the opening game, the FLC bats were hot. The Skyhawks compiled 14 hits and a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
Unfortunately for FLC, that's when everything started to fall apart.
FLC gave up six free passes and two passed balls to Pueblo, which came back and scored five runs in the final frame.
“All the kids hit the ball around in that first game," FLC head coach Pam Adams said.
Five of the Skyhawks had multiple hits in the game, including a 3-for-5, two-RBI game for Jordan Willis.
The second game was much closer as Jayme Fuller pitched five scoreless innings for FLC before giving up two runs in the bottom of the sixth..
Ashley Hibbs went 2-for-3 in the game and drove in the Skyhawks' lone run, plating Chelena Coulston in the fourth inning.
The Fort Lewis defense was solid in both games, according to Adams, the team just needed timelier hitting.
“We were right there in both games," she said. “We just need to make more opportunities and get some timely hitting."
FLC (13-17 overall, 12-11 RMAC) will look to rebound today with two more games against the ThunderWolves at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
“If we can get one or two more hits, that will really open the games up for us," Adams said.
