March 7, 2010.  Hays, KS. -
The Fort Lewis College softball team lost a pair of one-run games to Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, losing 8-7 and 9-8 in a double-header moved to Hays, KS., due to unplayable conditions in Kearney, NE.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games originally were scheduled for Kearney.

“We were up in both games, and we blew it," FLC head coach Pam Adams said.

“Both teams are hitting the ball well. We're not quite there with our pitchers yet," Adams said.

“But we really should have won both of those games."

The Skyhawks were ahead 8-1 in the sixth inning of the second game only to see Kearney tie the game and win in the eighth inning.

“Through five innings, we are doing well," Adams said. “We just have to work a little harder to finish."

She said the Fort Lewis hitters had a good day at the plate, including 14 hits in the second game Saturday.

Junior Kayla Bruner had three hits and drove in three runs in the opener, Adams said.

Ashley Hibbs, a sophomore, was 2-for-3 in the opener and 1-for-4 in the second game.

Natalie Janes and Stephanie Janes each had a hit in the opening game.

Chelena Coulston drove in four runs in the second game, going 4-for-5.

“Our pitchers are coming through early in games," the FLC head coach said. “We have to finish stronger. …. We have to help each other out."

The Skyhawks, 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the RMAC, will play Kearney in another doubleheader today in Hays, starting at 10 a.m. MST.
