KANSAS CITY, Kan. — No. 23 Fort Lewis College placed five players on the NSCAA/Performance Subaru NCAA Division II All-Central Region men's soccer team, the NSCAA announced today.
Three Skyhawks —
Jamie Cunningham,
Fabian Kling and
Kyle Wood — earned first team honors.
Thomas Hoang was named to the second team.
Cunningham, a 6-foot-2 senior defender from Pinnacle High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., amassed nine points on four goals and on assist in 2010. Previously this season, he was received Daktronics All-America honorable mention and was named to the All-RMAC first team. A year ago, Cunningham was a second team Daktronics All-American and a first team Daktronics All-Central Region pick.
During his career, he was a member of the RMAC All-Tournament team four times from 2007-10 and a four-time RMAC All-Academic award winner. He also was chosen by league coaches as the 2010 RMAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and was a member of the 2008 and 2010 Preseason All-RMAC teams.
“Jamie has been a rock these last two years and has been a great leader on and off the field,” said second-year FLC head coach
Oige Kennedy. “He will be a big miss for us next season.”
All four players were named to the All-Central Region first team last month in the separate Daktronics team, voted on by sports information directors. The NSCAA/Performance Subaru teams are chosen by NCAA Division II head men's soccer coaches.
Kling, a 6-foot-3 junior defender from Holblein High School in Augsburg, Germany, led the Skyhawks in goal scoring (eight) and ranked second in total points (16) in 2010. Thus far in 2010, King has also been named a third team Daktronics All-American, to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference second team and the RMAC All-Tournament Team. In 2009, he was named to the NSCAA All-Central Region first team, the Daktronics All-Central Region second team and the All-NCAA Division II Final Four Team. As a freshman in 2008, he earned first team All-RMAC honors. He has been a Preseason All-RMAC choice in 2009 and 2010.
“What more can you say about a guy who played center back but yet finished the season as our top goal scorer,” said Kennedy. “He has been one of our better performers this year and we expect a lot from him next year when he becomes the captain of this program.”
Wood, a 5-foot-11 senior midfielder from Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, N.M., had eight points on two goals and four assists this season. He was a first team All-RMAC pick in 2008 and 2010, a Preseason All-RMAC selection in 2009 and 2010, the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the 2009 NCAA Division II Final Four, RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll in 2008, Most Valuable Player of the 2008 RMAC tournament and RMAC All-Tournament in 2008 and 2010.
“Kyle is going to be a huge loss to our program,” said Kennedy. “He has been super this year and played in and started all 20 games. I think played all of the minutes too. He is one of the most talented players that we have had at the program, and is up there with the very best when it comes to entertainment value with the ball.”
Hoang, a 5-foot-11 junior midfielder from Liberty High School in Colorado Springs, started 16 of the 18 games he appeared in, leading the Skyhawks in total points (19), assists (nine) and shots (70). Earlier this season, he was named to the RMAC All-Tournament Team, the All-RMAC third team and was picked as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5, 2010.
“Thomas has had a great year statistically and we are looking forward to even more in his senior year,” said second-year head coach
Oige Kennedy.
The Skyhawks finished the 2010 season with records of 11-5-4 overall and 10-2-2 in the RMAC. Fort Lewis finished runner-up to Colorado Mines in both the regular season and league tournament.
Voting for the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-Central Region teams was done by head coaches at NCAA Division II men's soccer-playing schools in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. First team players move onto the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America ballot.
