KANSAS CITY, Kan. — No. 3 Fort Lewis College placed five players on the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-Central Region women's soccer teams, the NSCAA announced yesterday.

Hayley Hollenga and Erika Shisler were named to the regional first team, while Christine Schmelzle and Madyson Wellcome were named to the regional second team. Sara Egbom was named to the third team.

“You look at the maturation of the program, it's solely been on the hard work and the belief that these players have had throughout their careers,” said fourth-year head coach Damian Clarke. “They're program changers. [Former FLC head coach] Jaymee Carozza left me with a lot of tools.”

Clarke said that Egbom, Hollenga, Schmelzle and Shisler were all players that Carozza had recruited prior to his becoming head coach at FLC in 2007.

Hollenga, a 5-foot-8 junior forward from Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, is the Skyhawks' all-time leader in total points (88) and assists (22) and ranks second in career goals (33) behind Carissa Bradford (1995-99) and Kate Mahler (2003-06), each of whom had 34 markers during their respective careers.

2010 has seen Hollenga amass a wealth of recognition. She was named to both the NSCAA/Performance Subaru and Daktronics All-Central Region first teams (the former voted upon by coaches, the latter by sports information directors). She was also named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Academic All-RMAC and Preseason All-RMAC first teams, the RMAC All-Tournament Team, was the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 14, and became the first woman athlete in FLC history to be listed in Sports Illustrated's “Faces in the Crowd” (Sept. 30).

She led the RMAC in game-winning goals (six) and ranked third in the league in goals (13), goals per game (0.65), points (28) and points per game (1.40).

Shisler, a 5-foot-3 senior midfielder from Durango, ranks among the Skyhawks' all-time leaders in appearances (first, 89), assists (second, 21), total points (fourth, 63) and goals (fifth, 21). During 2010, she notched 18 total points (three goals, 12 assists).

She set a new Fort Lewis single-season record with 12 assists in 2010. She led the RMAC in assists (12) and assists per game (0.52), and also ranked among league leaders in points (12th, 18), points per game (15th, 0.78) and goals (30th, three).

Shisler became just the second player in FLC women's soccer history to earn All-America accolades when she received Daktronics All-America honorable mention earlier today. She was named to the All-Central Region first teams by both sports information directors (Daktronics) and Division II women's soccer coaches (NSCAA/Performance Subaru) in 2010. She was also a second team All-RMAC selection earlier this fall after being named third team All-RMAC in 2008.

Schmelzle, a 5-foot-9 senior from Coconino High School in Flagstaff, Ariz., was the backbone behind FLC's historic run this year. She became just the second Academic All-American in the program's history last month when she was named to the ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-America third team. She was also RMAC Athlete of the Month for October, RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, named to the All-RMAC, RMAC All-Academic and Preseason All-RMAC first teams, was a first team ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 pick, and a three-time RMAC Defensive Player of the Week performer.

Schmelzle led the RMAC in shutouts (10) and ranked among league leaders in saves (second, 96), shutouts per game (second, 0.43), goals against average (third, 0.76), save percentage (fourth, .842) and saves per game (eighth, 4.17).

Wellcome, a 5-foot-5 freshman defender from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., continues to garner quite a number of accolades for a freshman. She was previously named to the Daktronics All-Central Region second team, the RMAC All-Tournament team, the All-RMAC third team and was chosen as RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12, 2010.

Egbom, a 5-foot-4 junior forward from Hope Christian High School in Albuquerque, N.M., received NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-Central Region third team accolades after being named to the Daktronics All-Central Region second team last month. She was previously named to the RMAC All-Academic first team and All-RMAC and ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 second teams.

She ranks among RMAC leaders in assists (eighth, five), assists per game (13th, 0.22), total points (18th, 15), goals (20th, five), points per game (23rd, 0.65) and goals per game (26th, 0.22).

Voting for the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-Central Region teams was done by head coaches at NCAA Division II women's soccer-playing schools in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. First team players move onto the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America ballot.

Fort Lewis had the most successful season in the 17-year history of its women's soccer program in 2010. The Skyhawks went 18-3-2 overall and 12-1-1 in the RMAC, establishing new school standards for single-season success. FLC also won its first ever RMAC regular season women's soccer championship, its first-ever NCAA Division II Central Region title, advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA playoffs, and climbed to No. 3 in the national rankings, its highest-ever ranking.
