DURANGO, Colo. — Metro State (12-5-3) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II women's soccer championships thanks to a 5-4 advantage over Colorado Mines (11-6-4) in the penalty kick shootout today at Dirks Field. The shootout round followed a 1-1 battle through 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute overtime periods.

The game is officially recorded as a 1-1 draw in the record books, with Metro State advancing on penalties. The Roadrunners will face No. 3 Fort Lewis in the second round of the NCAA playoffs at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dirks Field. The host Skyhawks earned a first-round bye as the top seed in the Central Region.

Mines jumped out to 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Anna Evans tucked a well-placed shot from 12 yards out from the right just inside the far post at 26:27 for her 11th marker of the season. The slow-roller seemed to surprise Metro State goalkeeper Sarah Tanous, who was caught flat-footed and appeared to think the ball would roll wide of the net.

The Roadrunners leveled the score at 1-1 less than 10 minutes into the second half when Aubrey Fondy buried her second goal of the season past CSM goalkeeper Briana Schulze. Aleah DeGeneres and Madison McQuilliams assisted on the score, which came at 54:37.

The real fun didn't come until overtime. A through ball sprung DeGeneres in the 92nd minute and she outraced the Mines defense to the ball. She initially tried to chip the ball over the hard-charging Schulze, but the Oredigger goalkeeper rejected her first shot. DeGeneres collected the rebound and, with an open goal staring at her, blasted a shot from 10 yards out just over the crossbar.

Schulze came up big again with 31 seconds remaining in the first overtime by denying McQuilliams.

Megan Woodworth had an opportunity for Mines, but her shot was blocked by a Metro State defender midway through the second overtime.

Schulze stopped DeGeneres again in the 108th minute to force the shootout.

The penalty kick round saw the Orediggers shoot first. CSM's Kelsey Lang and MSCD's Caitlin Oliver each scored on their teams' first attempts. After Evans buried her chance, Metro's Becca Medina struck the middle of the crossbar to put the Roadrunners down 2-1. With a chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the third round, though, Woodworth was denied by Tanous. Michael' Ann Karas connected on Metro's third attempt, tying the shootout at 2-2. Both teams converted their fourth and fifth shots, with Sam Cardenas and Jessica Stark scoring for Mines and Fondy and McQuilliams matching their efforts for Metro.

Starting with the sixth shooters, the penalty kicks were sudden death. Mines' sixth shooter, Aubrey Bagley was stuffed by Tanous. Ashley Nemmers wasted little time by sending a low shot inside the left post to give the Roadrunners the 5-4 shootout win.

The end-to-end action in regulation play and the two overtimes saw each team fire 23 shots. Schulze made 11 saves for the Orediggers, while Tanous stopped 10 shots for the Roadrunners. Colorado Mines enjoyed a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Just eight fouls were called during the match: five against Mines and three against Metro.
